Word of the Day

provenance /ˈprɒv(ə)nəns/ - noun

  1. The place of origin or earliest known history of something.
1.1 The beginning of something's existence; something's origin.
1.2 A record of ownership of a work of art or an antique, used as a guide to authenticity or quality.

The definition is provided by the tried and trusted Oxford dictionary and this word has recently caught my attention, and after browsing through a few videos I chanced upon an episode of 'The Value of Art' by Sotheby's that talked about it slightly in depth.

Let's start with the pronunciation, having its origins from French, I'm just wondering if it would be acceptable to pronounce it like a French word, like café latte and bon appétit. Did a little search and found this on Youtube. I might just add this into my vocabulary.

Provenance adds a story to a thing; a painting, a furniture or even a doll. Value, often sentimental, causes something worthless, priceless. The story often gets lost over time. I can still recall an exercise that I always play during camps while growing up. We were to line up and whisper a secret message down the line. The results usually end up as a hilarious misinterpretation. I think it's called 'Chinese whispers'. Why Chinese, I do not know (personally I'm not offended :p). Here's the reality, we need a reliable source for the story to stay as true as it's original intent over time. I did hear that #Ledgit is coming out with an app built on blockchain technology. Looking forward to seeing if it can do what it says it claims.

Here's episode 4 from the interesting series I mentioned. Do check it out!
