The executive (ego) function of the brain authenticates what to trust, and co-ordinates attention, which leads to a “reality tunnel” in the default mode network. The word executive comes from ex- ‘out’ + sequi ‘follow’, the same root as social, and the ego system directs attention, the social cognition of the brain, which in the Homo lineage has undergone rapid evolution in the past 3 million years.

The trend in the evolution of civilization is to offload authentication of what to trust, executive control, to external processing, which forms a “super ego” that is external to the brain, and integrates with memory in the memetic cortex.

The evolution of the exocortex, and primitive legal systems

With things like computers, one way functions, and so on, there is a lot of possibility to build “external social cognition” that does not use coercion, but that extends rather than amputates. So, from that vantage point, it is useful to look at the present, and see what a new model would change.

As the Freudian “super ego” is external to the brain, and in the nation-state acts by coercion, over-ruling the executive control of individual people, it leads to a form of “executive disorder” where self-regulation of the memetic cortex is attenuated, amputated, causing slave mentality or what is wrongly called “mental illness”.

The actual memetic infection that causes slave mentality, comes in the form of laws. Laws, when “hosted” on human brains, has genetic bias such as dominance that will express themselves as coercive behaviour, and so the ruling class, including psychiatrists, express certain memes that are pathological to society as a whole, and that act through pecking orders to diminish control (social cognition) in those at the bottom.

These memetic infections, which produce a culture that can be broadly defined as "statism", can be modelled as “legal disorders”, and are largely avoided by game theoretical models that build on voluntary agreements.
