The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - LGBT+ Edition Week 5

in lgbt •  7 years ago  (edited)

Sunday in America means it's time for another installment of The Good, The Bad, and the Ugly - LGBT+ Edition! I've seen a ton of posts in the past week with the #LGBT tag (so many that this curation project is becoming a bit overwhelming for just lil' ol' me), which is fantastic! Many of them were on the 8th, which was International Women's Day.

We have seen a massive influx of new members on Steemit LGBT+ Discord from all over the world - so many that we've begun creating channels for specific languages (though we do run the Translate Bot as well)!

One of the goals @sykochica and I set for the community was to get that tag visible on the list. I don't see it there yet, but we're definitely moving in that direction. Thank you for that, Steemit community! You are a model for the world to emulate.

That being said, there were also far more awful posts in the past week. So I'm changing the format of this curation project a bit, at least for this week, to limit The Ugly to only the content which constitutes harassment or abuse, and either the posts themselves or comments beneath them deserve to be flagged in my opinion. I've taken it upon myself to read every single one of these posts (among hundreds more which I didn't curate), including painstakingly translating many of them. Perhaps I have a sado-masochistic streak, but I could definitely use a vacation right about now.

My 20 SBD contest for a graphic design to head this project ends tomorrow! There have been some fantastic entries so far! If you would like a shot at my SBD's, get those entries submitted!

The Good

These two have been reviewing television shows with LGBT+ characters and themes for a few weeks now. To be honest, the only reason you didn't see them here sooner is my aversion to television. Read @spicyshai's review here and @jose27117's review here.

English translations for both in the comments.

(I have counted these as two entries for the purpose of curation awards.)

Also these are past payout, but were posted after last week's curation, so follow them to keep up with the current editions!

This article from Jay Michaelson over at The Daily Beast ... nails it.

An analysis of the visibility of trans men in Venezuela, which the author kindly posted both in Spanish and in English.

Used this one because beer

A heart-wrenching tale of traveling while enby. Also ht to @steampunk-penny for telling me what "enby" means. (You kids and your hip lingo! LOL)

@cinderello

Doesn't hurt that he's also handsome!

We all have a "coming-out" story. This one is spectacular. Another great contribution in Spanish.

English translation in the comments.

@nicvander

A post titled Opinion of a Mexican Male On the LGBT Marks and Its Causes (Without Censorship), which I couldn't find the original in Spanish but the author was kind enough to translate into English. I would have given this post a $500 upvote if I was a whale.

@doejane

A fairly new Steemian writes about "conversion therapy", and this one hits me in the feels because I was forced into it as well in the late 1980s. Also if you think this is some silly joke or the practice has been halted, have a look here.

@all4publicity

Another new Steemian (welcome!) whose introduction post should make some of us check our privilege. To anyone who thinks that's just some leftist talking point: You better pack a lunch before you challenge me on it.

Rainbow Underground released a mix tape, the proceeds from which are being donated to Trans Lifeline and Planned Parenthood.

@tibrolike

A Fantastic Woman won the Academy Award for Best "Foreign" Language Film, a first for both Chile and a film starring a transgender actor.

The Bad

Umm ... I could do a separate curation for how many of these guys think there's some "agenda" or "psy-op" or "deception" that is for some (sociopathic) reason targeting them, personally. Of course they never get around to explaining why such an agenda would exist, or what makes them so important (protip: they're not) that it would specifically target them. Also @thetanster's post seems to have nothing to do with whatever delusional "gender inversion psy-op" the author is fantasizing about.

Hey @johnnygeneric: I'm not accusing all white Christian males of pedophilia, even though the statistics are indisputable regarding who commits the overwhelming number of such horrific crimes.

@freedomexists would correctly point out the inherent flaw of painting entire groups of people with such broad strokes if it was directed at whatever ideological group with which they align.

Wow, @chrispheros. You're off your meds, right?

Right. Nevermind that @felixixi is watching cats have sex.

@froyoempire says Katy Perry might be "some kind of transgender" like it's a bad thing.

The Ugly

I wish @outtheshellvlog the best, and I hope he gets professional help before he damages something more permanent than his reputation on Steemit. If this behavior is any example, he is a sociopath and a pathological liar, and his comments crossed the line.

@caladium is obsessed with trans people's genitals. Normally I would just heckle them mercilessly, but this, this, this, this, and this are just the examples from the past week ...

@tuyed96: What if I replace "LGBT" with "Muslim" in this? You can't even conceptualize it, can you? And to those who tell me I shouldn't debate religion while you simultaneously pretend to oppose censorship: Your silence regarding this ongoing atrocity is deafening. I can show you 100 posts at least as bad as this one without even trying, and 1000 more if I actually put some effort into it. Which means you can too. You just choose not to.

We've been over this repeatedly, @buffersmckyle.

Unfortunately, I can only afford 1 SBD each for the creators of The Good content. As you may or may not be aware, this is not a community project. I manually curate all of these posts myself and fund the curation awards from my own wallet. I will award 20 SBD to the winner of the contest I have running, but as of right now, I'm not 100% sure I will be able to do so immediately upon payout of the related post. Please bear with me. I give away almost all of my SBD and I am definitely not trying to stiff anybody.

Wow this is interesting I have never seen curation with bad and ugly parts but equally this is a great idea, some might not like it...infact I hope never to feature in either if I am honest but to me its all learning to be fair. Thanks for this.

Part of raising awareness is making the public understand the paranoia and outright hatred we face. I'm not going to sugar-coat it or make it more palatable for them, because we don't have that luxury. I want this to make people uncomfortable. I want them to think about how they treat each other. In many ways, it is bigger than just the LGBT+ community. I have been close to jumping off the roof of my building on more than one occassion because I can't wave a magic wand or something to make people leave each other the hell alone as the default position. I wish it was all rainbows and unicorns, but some of the statistics (which I'm sure you know) are appalling and would be a rallying cry for widespread social change if it was any other demographic. So fuck anyone who squirms in their seat reading this. My people are being disowned, abused, raped, murdered, and if reporting it makes someone uncomfortable ... good.

I wanted to post on Chrispheros' post a question.
He mentioned "abnormal masturbation"

I wanted to ask, "What is abnormal masturbation?
I'm in my 50's, given that I started at maybe 13 or so, maybe an average of 5 times a week (peak in the teens), tapered off during times when I had an unholy partner or two, then picked up again at times, let's call it, maybe 40 years or so, for a total of let's say, 12,480, but let's round it to maybe 14,500.

Have I been doing wrong? I feel like I kinda have it really nailed down apt, but, what is Abnormal masturbation? Can you post a dlive video of how to do it, so I don't make a mistake any more?"

But I didn't. I googled "abnormal masturbation" and got distracted.
Let's just say, I ended my night watching Weird Hockey Scores on Youtube, and the path from abnormal masturbation to there was an awesome adventure.

I remember an episode of ER where a teen came in with dermal abrasion from wanking. Is that abnormal? Could that be what he meant?

Trust me, I'm a doctor.

Ahh, karma ... this has been a very difficult, frustrating day for me, between having to redo the translations and reduce the award for The Good because it comes entirely from my meager wallet.

So thank you. I needed a laugh.

You're amazing for doing this curation project. I know @sykochica has delgated some SP to you, but I sure hope you get more. My 100% upvote isn't enough, dammit! Now, I've been meaning to design a logo for that contest. Better get to it!

Thank you for reading my post, great work you are doing @ancapbarbie, thank you very much for the steem you sent me the pure fact that you liked the post was enough, a greeting from Mexico !!!!!!!!

Thank you for writing it. I wish more guys were confident enough with their own sexuality to not feel threatened by someone else's.

THEREIN Lies the KEY to reducing persecution, it would be a Great Start!

Glad to see the community growing and to see the list of the THE GOOD increasing! It's beautiful that a lot of these aren't necessarily in English. Thank you for doing this curation and helping the community grow!

I really enjoyed reading through this, I think sharing good content is an important part of Steemit - it can help bring more people together from a broad range of communities. I know as well just how much work goes into creating a post like this - reading each post you share and providing a brief overview - it's hard work and deserves both thanks and congratulations. I am also very impressed you dig into the negative as well, it's brave but I understand why you are doing it and I think it's a stand more people should take - to support everyone and stand up for what they believe in and what is right.

Thank you. As a leader of a community for which I have worlds of respect and admiration, that means a lot to me.

I love the good/bad/ugly aspect of this. BRILLIANT!

I find it so sad that people can be so filled with hate. We are all free to agree or disagree with anyone or anything, but to be intentionally hurtful--that undermines everything.
