[[Equitas LGBT+ #06]] Biphobia is gaining ground.

Biphobia is gaining ground.

The meaning of biphobia comes from the hatred or aversion of people that feel emotional and sexual attraction for people of both genders. These rather hostile stances towards bisexual people are taken by those who are heterosexual and homosexual alike.

Biphobia supposes a great obstacle for people who identify as bisexual to take that big step of telling the world and their loved ones about their real sexual orientation. Only a few manage to come out “of the closet”, meaning that they tend to hide their sexual orientation from the LGBT+ community.

In 2013, the Investigation Centre PEW conducted a survey which came out with the information that bisexual men tend to confess their sexual orientation three times less than homosexual men and they also indicate higher levels of societal distrust. These indicators point out the fact that bisexuals are less accepted in our societies and there are less social advancements in favor of their sexual identity.

Another more complicated reason related to bisexuals' fear of coming out is that not all of them admit their true identity to themselves, they often consider themselves as “heteroflexible”.

A diverse number of studies indicates that 80% of bisexual people prefer to lead a heterosexual life, which allows them to maintain their bisexuality hidden, and this way they manage to free themselves of the social pressure that is coming out of the closet.

The most worrying thing that these studies have exposed is that bisexual people that are out, get discriminated by heterosexual people as well as homosexual people.

The words that bisexuals usually hear from those who do not accept them are: confusion, indecision or deceit. They are considered as people who are unable to come to terms with their “real” sexuality or people who are hiding it.

A main researcher about the study of bisexuality mentioned that it was time to enter open the debate on bi-phobia in the LGBT+ community.

“This is the thing that isn’t talked about... it's like respectoairing out the dirty laundry of the supposed ‘LGBT community.’ It’s saying, ‘Look, we haven’t been acting like this community that we’re supposed to be, and we need to do something about that.”
Tangela Roberts.

Bisexuals have been a huge subject within the LGBT+ community and out of it, because they are considered confused. Which is something that is completely false because this is a sexual orientation like any other and we must respected as such.

It's time for the LGBT+ community to act with the purpose it was created for: acceptance of diverse and excluded sexual orientations, mutual support, to gain respect from those who are against us or attack our morals.

Biphobia should disappear from our community and we should unite with the people that need our support to overcome the rejection imposed by society.
