Book recommendations, Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli

This week I have read two very gay books. I have been in the mood to read about relationships between two dudes lately, and I have two more of those kinds of books lined up for next week. Anyway, I am very impressed with both the books I have read this week, the stories seemed very real and I could really connect with the characters. These two authors are quite similar in their writing style, but at the same time completely different.

”History Is All You Left Me” is written by the author Adam Silvera and was first published in 2017. The main character is 17 years old Griffin, who just lost his best friend and ex-boyfriend, Theo (as in the dude is dead). The story then goes on from Griffin’s perspective, jumping back and forth in time, between ”history” and ”today”. I do not want to spoil too much, but the book is mainly about how Griffin and the ones around him handles the grief. This includes Theo’s parents and little sister, Griffin and Theo’s best friend Wade, and Theo’s new boyfriend Jackson. The book is full of all kinds of emotions, and it is hard to put down the book when you first start reading it. Even though the main story sounds quite sad, there are a lot of joyful moments as well, and the book deals with a lot of different issues all teenagers may face after a loss. I really, really recommend you to read this book, as it is time well spent.

”Simon VS. The Homo Sapiens Agenda” by Becky Albertalli is by now a pretty known book, as it is being made into a movie which will be released in the cinema in March this year. The book is quite a short and easy read, but it is absolutely amazing! The main character, Simon, is a closeted 17 years old gay dude, who goes to a completely normal high school, and has a completely normal family and group of friends. - But once, he forgets to log out of his email account, where he has been sending messages to this other closeted gay dude in his school, Blue, and someone else sees these messages and starts blackmailing Simon. As Simon has not told anyone about himself or Blue, he is facing this completely alone, and has to choose his steps carefully so his secret is not revealed to the entire school. The book is full of all kinds of emotions, just like ”History Is All You Left Me”, but it is a lot more lighthearted, even though it deals with blackmailing. I really enjoyed this book, and I cannot wait for the movie in March, I highly recommend you to read this, as it deals with a lot more than just lgbt issues.
