Utilitarianism is Useful, Voluntarism is Moral

in liberty •  6 years ago

Utilitarianism, social justice, communism and all forms of collectivism regard the supreme rule of ethics as the ends justifying the means, however, in individual ethics, this notion is the denial of all morals.

Hitler, Stalin, Genghis Khan and every tyrannical leader that ever lived said what they did was for the greater good. The greater good for who though? Your race? Your family? Your country? Utilitarianism is a subjectivist philosophy as the outcome can never be known and the greatest good is subjective.

Objective morality is established through the self-evident truth that we own ourselves and provided we are not having our person or property aggressed through force or fraud, we are entitled to be left in peace to the pursuit of our own happiness.

Charity and sacrifice are important factors in morality however they should be voluntary. Self-sacrifice can be altruistic. Sacrificing others however for the greater good, a theme in collectivist ethics (communism) is relativistic and akin to the Ring of Sauron in that one's demise is ensured through its use.

Utilitarianism promotes compromising the moral certitudes of the present for the hope of a better tomorrow. It allows it's proponents to appeal to the fallacy of potentiality i.e that inanimate objects pose a risk to the safety of individuals, therefore, citizens should be deprived of these items.

We are all living in a buble of potentiality. The future is pure imagination and one should be mindful of it but not at the cost of the present.

Voluntaryism is an objective moral argument that stems from self-ownership and sound deontological first principles (don't rape, steal, assault, commit fraud i.e Universal Laws). It doesn't require empirical evidence to support its claim unlike Utilitarianism as the reasoning is logically consistent with its first principles.
Voluntaryism stems from the realisation that we all want things in life however compromising what is a violation of someones rights in the present moment for what may lead to the most amount of good is always wrong.
