Out With a Whimper?
Is this how liberty ends in America? We have called talkshows, commented on political Facebook groups, bought our Don't Tread on Me shirts and flags, given money to defeat the other side, written our politicians, and oh yeah, voted too.
Have anyone noticed that the macro picture is not changing? The Fed continues to water down the dollar, the federal debt keeps getting larger, liberties continue to be erased, and the Constitution continues to be ignored. We celebrate Independence Day with nary a thought that the country that was created for us, no longer exists. We have officially been tread upon, now what?
No amount of flag-waving will wipe away the downward slide of liberty. The good news is that America is about the only country where the fight for liberty is an ongoing discussion. Most countries around the world do not have a libertarian tradition to celebrate and use for inspiration. Lucky for us we can gaze upon the writings of our founders to understand their intentions.
What we can do? Our most powerful “weapon” in this fight, and make no mistake this is a fight, is non-participation and the nullification clause of the tenth amendment. We as individuals can choose not to participate in activities that diminish our liberty. On the state and local level, the tenth amendment states: 'The powers not delegated to the United States by the Constitution, nor prohibited by it to the States, are reserved to the States respectively, or to the people.' In a nutshell, the states can ignore federal laws for commerce within the bounds of each state.
The tenth amendment has been employed time and time again by almost every state in the union. Recently the “nullification clause” as it is known has been used to legalize marijuana and reject provisions of Obamacare. The federal government can do very little to combat this as they require the states' assistance to enforce federal laws. Again, they require the states help to enforce their laws. So when our states lament about federal overreach, they can absolutely do something about it. Don't let your legislature pretend it is powerless. Remind them of the tenth amendment.
Non-participation is the one thing you as the individual can do to fight for your liberties. The first example of this is homeschooling your kids and refusing to send them to a government school. Poor educating, godlessness and indoctrination all go away when you remove your kids from the system. Yes, then the hard work begins, but you are free. If you grow a garden and buy organic then you are refusing to support a corporate/government(Monsanto) arrangement that seeks to control the food supply. As our currency is being devalued and our spending is being monitored, one possible solution for the future is crypto-currencies such as Bitcoin. Even if you don't feel comfortable holding Bitcoin long-term, use Bitcoin for your online shopping as much as possible and get familiar with it. It was designed as a currency that governments could not pervert by the printing press. Boom! There are three things you can do to combat the loss of liberty in your life.
Admittedly, for one someone who grew up in a pretty free country, things are moving very quickly in the wrong direction. With the re-emergence of the tenth amendment as a nullification tool and several actions we can take as individuals, we have many ways to buck this trend and truly say we are the land of the free and mean it. Freedom is hardwork, but something we must do!
