I remember when I first moved into the US, the Backstreet Boys were huge.

Everyone was listening to them in my class. The boys and the girls.

Heck, even the teachers were listening to them.

As the years went by though, people began evolving.

Backstreet Boys were no longer cool.

Rather, if you were a dude who listened to them, you were called 'gay' by the other guys in the class.

Being a foreign kid who wasn't aware of much cultural lingo, I had no clue how a music preference meant I was gay.

The other 7 year olds would find any other kid who listened to them & openly mock them.

Linkin Park & Eminem were considered the cool music by these kids.

Who decided what was cool or not?

But being a youngster, I was like, 'okay I'll play along with this.'

So I stopped listening to the Backstreet Boys.

Well, by the time I got into high school & began playing basketball, a part of me needed a hype song to get amped up.

My heart told me to listen to 'Larger than Life.'

But then my rational mind was like....'whoa there bucko! don't forget it's not cool.'

So I found another track to listen to.

As a few weeks passed, I decided enough was enough.

I was going to download a few Backstreet boys song on my iPod & change the name so no one could tell.

One day, I was in the locker room with the other guys getting ready for gym class.

And you can tell I was getting hyped.

This caught the attention of a kid named Chris.

Chris came up to me and was like 'Trilli, what you getting so hyped about? Let me listen!'

And just like that, he grabs one ear bud and begins listening along.

He listened for a few before he was able to make out what song it was.

I tried to skip forward to the next track.

But it was too late.

Chris's fatass was already blurting out 'Hey guys!! Trilli is listening to the Backstreet Boys. Hahah.'

The entire locker room busted out in laughter.

They all clowned me & said I had the music taste of a girl.

Lowkey, I was very embarrassed.

Until, I wasn't.

At that point, I realized I had spent YEARS avoiding this band whose music I enjoyed.

All for what?

So a bunch of other kids wouldn't judge me?

What a foolish mistake.

That locker room moment allowed me to feel as though an anchor had been removed internally.

What's funny is that a lot of kids from my locker room came later to me in silence and said:

'Bro I love the Backstreet Boys too. Just didn't want anyone to know. What's your favorite song?'

I realized, that caring about other people's opinions like that is always a losing game.

They ain't living in my shoes. Nor am I living in their's.

They can have all the opinions they want.

But at the end of the day, if it ain't helping me, then I ain't letting it influence me.

Ask yourself this..

What is your Backstreet Boys moment?

What is it that you are hiding for fear of embarrassment?

Once you spot that moment, ask yourself...

Will these people matter in 5 years?

Do these people even matter now?

When you start asking yourself these questions, you begin getting your mind to think correctly.

Remember this OG, you don't just stop caring about opinions out of the blue moon.

It is a very painful process.

But those who will survive will tell ya its 100% worth it.

So ask yourself the questions which matter, answer them & then choose your next moves with your future in mind.
