I have a strange relationship with shyness.
Growing up, when I was living in Kirinyaga, I was a very talkative kid.
Would talk nonstop, get in trouble & play a lot of pranks.
Just like a lot of other 4 years olds at the time.
But things abruptly changed out of nowhere.
I ended up moving to the United States & having to basically start over.
I learned English in Kirinyaga, but it was always just enough to be able to understand the language.
But now I had to communicate with it?
Houston, we may have a problem.
My first year in Kindergarten sucked!
I kept getting clowned for how I sounded.
Apparently my English was awful & I had the tendency to stretch out my words a lot.
Results?
Self consciousness regarding my voice, which led to shyness.
The next few years felt like hell.
Easy things began feeling difficult.
'Like what?'
Like having a conversation & hoping that I wasn't going to get judged for everything.
Years & years went on until I finally decided to do something about my shyness.
I decided to join a Toastmasters & feel more confident.
Which is exactly what I did.
After learning the art of public speaking, my shyness soon melted away.
And most importantly, after spending so many years on shyness, I want to give some unfiltered truths.
1. Shyness is a Social Weakness
Don't want to be the bearer of bad news, but shy people are walked over in the social world.
Not thru maliciousness by others.
But by being given the fly on the wall treatment.
When people find out you are not interested in talking, they often view you as disinterested & dip.
2. Shyness affects self image
Yup, it's true.
You can lie to many people in this world, but you can't lie to yourself.
When you are shy, you end up suffering from confidence issues & wonder if something is wrong.
Less comfort in your voice unfortunately spills over to other aspects in your life.
3. Shyness makes you overthink
I empathize with shy people because I know they would like for things to change.
'What if some people are just quiet?'
Then they are quite.
Quiet & shy are NOT the same things.
Quiet is when you can speak, but you just don't feel the need to.
Shy is when you want to speak, but you feel hindered by self consciousness.
Re-read until you truly digest the difference.
But there is good news!
Shyness can end when you want it to end.
If you noticed my story, I was able to get rid of shyness. There is no reason you cannot either.
You just need to have the desire to do so.
If you read my 3 unfiltered truths above, then you hopefully have developed some desire to begin a journey to melting shyness.
Here are a few tips I want you to get started with.
1. Shyness = Weak social muscle
What do you do when you are weak?
'I workout.'
Exactly! Do the same with your interactions.
Make it an effort to talk to 1 new person a day. Start off small & work your way up from there.
Strengthen your social muscle.
2. Public Speak
This is the quickest way to overcome shyness.
The best way to shed self consciousness is by putting yourself out there & not caring.
This is more of a 'tackle the beast' directly approach.
You can start with step 1 & build your way up to step 2, or just begin here if you are on a time crunch.
3. Read Fiction books
Right now, your thinking is too limited.
We want to expand it by working your imagination.
I don't have any research to back up these claims, but fiction books make you better in social interactions.
You become more pleasant to interact with & more creative as well.
Charisma will soon follow.
Apply these 3 tips & shed your shyness!
In a social world where things are ambiguous, everything seems confusing at first.
But if you are serious about flipping your life around, and willing to allocate 90 days to shed your shyness then I have a solution for you.
No more feeling self conscious, being a fly on the wall & second guessing yourself before speaking.
We will go thru a brand new social boot camp to hold you accountable & shatter each social goal one at a time.
