How You Can Stop Being Average

in life •  8 years ago  (edited)

It is easy. Stop doing what average people are doing. Start doing what extraordinary people do.

The act of doing is what separates the wheat from the chaff. Big mouths took over the world. Exaggerated promises, big declarations, and stories with no substance behind them - that's so common today. Words, words, words....

People are generally very low on actions. That is your opportunity.

Small things matter

I have good news for you. You don't have to do extraordinary things. You just need to do small things consistently.

Today's media focuses mostly on the glamour and noise. World records, multimillion deals, heroic acts. But not one of those extraordinary folks doing those things do them every day.

Warren Buffet doesn't strike investments with a 50% return every day, Usain Bolt doesn't break a world record every day, but when they do they are making it to all different media outlets and you think it's how one becomes extraordinary.

No.

They became extraordinary by working on their thing day after day. They learned. They practised. They worked. Then, after months and years of persistent practice, they made achieved something big.

Time matters

Top tennis players practice tennis regularly. World class managers attend meetings with their teams regularly. World class investors study the market regularly.

You become extraordinary, a master in your field, by 10,000 hours of training. Yes, it's that long. But you know what? Sitting on your hands doesn't make it any shorter. There is no alternative to hustle, so you'd better start today. Or yesterday. Or ten years ago.

I started writing at the age of 21 in 2013 and I'm already about 2,000 hours into writing practice. Am I average? I don't think so.

A few concrete “don’ts”

Stop doing what average people do. Switch off the TV. An average American watches 33 hours a week. Successful people watch much less television (unless they have a very specific career, like in TV, that forces them to watch a lot).

Take control over time wasting mental addictions like video gaming and social media. Get rid of the addiction, not of the useful tools.

I learned the basics of English playing computer games, and so did my 13 year old son who didn't bother to learn English until he started playing online games with players from all around the world.

I tend to waste a lot of time on Steemit and Facebook, but I also get much out of those platforms.

Do what successful people do

They focus on personal development, education and relationships. They take great care of themselves physically and mentally. They have a vision for their lives.
