Those of you over the age of 21 (or 18 in some jurisdictions) know very well exactly what this term means. And, for those of you who do not, just watch some “re-runs” of the very popular US television series, “Cheers”, that ran from 1982-93.
The neighborhood pub is a place where you can go for a cold beer, good drink, some “pub grub” and enjoy an afternoon or evening, by yourself, with your wife or partner, or with a group of friends. It’s a very comfortable place and, if you frequent it regularly, the staff will get to know you and what you like, and will treat you as family. That’s why it’s so comfortable; a home away from home. Every city has at least one or more depending on the size of the city, that’s why it’s called “neighborhood” pub!
We have a home in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. Our neighborhood pub is “bossa – social café & bar”, and that’s a perfect description. It has something for everyone and is a very social place. The bar is well stocked, serving cold beer, wines and any drink you may want; and, of course, several large TV screens to view any number of sporting events. That said, this is not a bar where you will find patrons watching tennis or golf; this is rugby country! The restaurant/café, which adjoins the pub serves excellent food with an extensive and varied menu. And, it has a fireplace for those chilly winter days. Outside there are picnic tables and a playground for the children. As I said, something for everyone.
The staff is very friendly and accommodating. Last time I was there I was alone as my wife was away; so I went in for lunch on a Saturday; went into the pub, ordered a beer and proceeded to watch (of course) rugby! The waitress asked why my wife wasn’t with me! As I said, it’s like being part of an extended family.
