A strong civilization absolutely has a strong defense system. History proves from the times of Roman & Persian, the period of Islamic khilafah keemasab, to the present defense force becomes one of the pillars of the power of civilization. Notice the gestures of world power, since the cold war between the Soviet Union and America and its allies. It all refers to the strength of their defense system, one of them in the military field.

There is one concept that God gave to his prophet from the beginning of this people's journey of history. This concept became one of the pillars of civilization and immortal revival. Namely konse "jihad fii sabilillah" (fighting in the way of Allah SWT).

In today's distorted world the word jihad is often plotted as a "destructive" (destructive) and negative concept. Even in the minds of some non-Muslims, the word jihad is perhaps one of the most frightening words of the day. Every time this word slid from the mind of a person imagined then was murder, bombing, kidnapping, arson, and so on. So often I say: "explaining jihad is jihad itself". That's because it's so hard to explain this word to the people whose head has awakened a frightening concept.

What is jihad?

Jihad is often identified with wars labeled with the sacred word. Thus, according to them, the jihad is a holy war.

Indeed such a definition is more of a European Christian definition with their "crusade" concept. In Islam frankly it is not known what is called holy war. Because Islam never sees war as sacred. Even if it is not because of forced or in terms of Al-Quran "wa huwa kurhun lakuk" (you hate it) war will be forbidden by Islam.

Jihad is Arabic which means "work or hard work and earnest". And this can be a physical nuance, will and spirit.

So if it is defined jihad is doing a serious effort in doing good or stop the evil, both physically, intellectually and with the heart.

From this definition it can be concluded that jihad is not only its physical relevance, including war, but also through the means of reason and ruhiyah (the heart). History records that the first verse of jihad descended to the true Apostle in the period of Mecca, when the physical war was unthinkable. Allah says: "And strive with them with great jihad (jihadan kabiran)". This great jihad according to our scholars is jihad with rationality, with logical argument, wise and patient attitude, and consistent in conveying the truth.

In short the jihad in Islam as a pillar of the rise of modern civilization includes three elements:

First, jihad with ruhiyah is mature. That is the ability to perform various virtues through the connection of the heart with the greatness and purity of the Divine. Both through various ritual and social activities in life. With this ruhiyah ties all our humanitarian activities will be "fully meaningful" (worth worship). Only denhan jihad ruhiyah this influence tendency egoism and lust in the activity can be controlled. The failure of people in many respects to control emotions and anger these days may also be a strong indication of the failure of this jihad ruhiyah.

To be honest, this is the greatest and heaviest jihad in Islam. Because this jihad applies in all places, times and in all situations, peace and war.

Secondly, with our reasoning minds that always put forward clear thinking, positive, and broad-minded and deep. The IQRA command actually covers all of it. Jihad with intellectual thought also means the social obligation to master the "science" (science and technology) in all fields. This is not something unfamiliar in the history of the people of Muhammad SAW.

Third, jihad with the existence of our body. That is doing good or preventing evil by using the body that Allah entrusted to us. And this includes everything, from smiling with a cheerful face, clearing the way from thorns, to fighting to stop the oppression.

Thus it can be understood that the fi sabilillah war if it is true in principle and done in the right way is part of jihad. But jihad is not just fighting. Perhaps this is where for us Muslims in the West, the greatest jihad is proving that Islam is not what they understand. In fact I am sure, this is one of the greatest jihad for the people of Muhammad SAW today. You know! (Continued)!
