11 Essential Skills They Don't Teach Us in School

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

There's education we get in school. And there's education life teaches us. Lately, I've been starting to realize that I practically use less and less of a things I learned in school, while constantly discovering important skills never even mentioned in there.

In the ever-changing whirlwind of life we often get caught unprepared facing challenges that seem scary and beyond our possibilities. Sometimes we face them and learn. Sometimes they break us. Sometimes we have no idea what's going on and just wish we picked up that wisdom somewhere along the way.

I'm a strong believer that education should include learning life skills. Yet we get out of school without any idea how to interact with outside world, how to be successful and happy. Before I start talking about the grand conspiracy and how this is someone's best interest, let's see some of those skills we have to learn on our own.

1. How to manage time

Have you ever found yourself being busy all day only to realize you accomplished nothing at the end of it? Schedules, to-do lists, RPMs, Pomodoro and Feynman techniques... there's so many ways to become more productive that we don't utilize.

2. How to be financially wise

With so many people retiring poor and financially uneducated we would all benefit from making school systems focus more on money mastery. Books like "Rich dad, poor dad" you have to discover on your own.

3. How to communicate effectively

For a skill that is crucial for success in today's age and has effect on every aspect of life, it's amazing to see how little people know about this.

4. How to lead healthy lifestyle

Nutrition and diet, preparing and growing your own food, regular exercising, meditation, yoga - are all beneficial skills. Leading healthy lifestyle not only prevents illness, but produces more energy and motivation to pursue our goals. Time to start treating your body like a temple.

5. How to take a break

Have you ever felt so overwhelmingly exhausted and brain fried all you wanted to do is sit on your couch with a bowl full of candy and watch netflix for the next two weeks? Burnout is a serious condition - as a web developer, sometimes when I overwork myself, it comes a time when I just stare at the screen without mental energy to write a simple block of code. Rest before you are tired. Even if you love what you do and every day seems like a holiday.

6. How to create healthy relationships

The most important single ingredient in the formula of success is knowing how to get along with people

Theodore Roosevelt

7. How to fail

It's not the failure that stops us. It's the fact that we often give up after the first failure. Get up and dust yourself. Try new approach. From a new angle. Most amazing things on this earth were born from countless trials and errors.

8. How to master anything

You can't learn this in school. Mastery begins when formal education ends. Unfortunately. When you discover that passion that drives you and sets your heart on fire.

9. How to set goals

Setting aside time at regular intervals to plan and review your goals is a must. It's more about the journey than the end goal, yes, but if you don't have some direction, then you're just aimlessly drifting through life.

10. How to have fun

Once you get to school, they'll do everything to wipe the fun the f*ck out of you. And life without fun is not just dull, but very unhealthy. How often do you forget all the responsibilities and just enjoy the moment?

11. How to love ourselves

It all starts and ends here. We are so busy trying to impress others and be accepted. We never stop and think of who we are and what actually matters to US.

Love yourself so much that when someone treats you wrong, you recognize it.

I agree with you fully. And there is something that schools do not teach and it is how to act on the street. Inside the school is a world, outside of it is another totally different. Have a good weekend!

Exactly, nothing about how to sell and negotiate, how to fix a car or find a job... I'm 29 and I still didn't have to use algebra.

homeschool

It seems more and more like the best solution.

Govern-cement schools are training for prison life.
Along with, everything I learned in school, I later learned was wrong.

Equals, do not send any kids to govern-cement schools.

I have to agree. You get in as a happy, normal kid, and get out programmed, numb prisoner of the system.

it is...I know from experience...well second hand experience. My grandkids were homeschooled...worked out just fine.

All great points no matter where you are in life. Thanks for your post.

I'm glad you liked this!

I have not is used a single thing I learned in class l in what I do now. I didn't learn my language there (English through games and movies, Mandarin through my mother, Malay through the people I interact with, German through Duolingo), didn't learn my math (useful ones at least) there, certainly not the skills I have now that is ESSENTIAL to my life and work. Honestly I feel kinda glad that I didn't get to university. Not to be arrogant but I feel like the best people my age (23 years young) are all non-graduates, unless you're a technical professional (doctor, engineers etc.), Bosses aren't gonna choose you with a "Bachelor of business administration" over that 'dropout' who has been hustling for years managing people and establishing professional network.

While some jobs require a bachelor's degree, you're right,it doesn't matter what degree you finished. I'm an engineering gradiate but I work in IT due to lack of job availability for me when I graduated. The only time I was able to ever use Calculus was when I taught part-time.

Yep.. thanks for seeing eye-to-eye with me. I'm not trying to talk down on graduates, no.. it's not an easy thing too to be in a high pressure environment and absorb so many academic knowledge in a sort span of time. However im just sharing my observation that really, other than specialized-high-skill jobs, most of the time those knowledge never gets applied in the real world.

Looked over at your profile and wow! you've got some amazing posts! im following!

Thanks much!

Thanks for the great input! As someone who was at University and decided to leave it, I can agree with you. I had like 10 years of English study, but only became somewhat good at it once I left school.

Don't let schooling get in the way of your education
Who said that ? ;)

@johndogett Great comment and Great quote

Have a Good Weekend !!

My education started once I left school. Passion driven education is how people flourish.

I couldn't have said it better! Beautiful.

Bro!!!! Great content! I am currently studying many things that it would be nice to have learned in school.

Thanks! We get out of school with so little idea about how the real life works. Good luck learning your lessons the hard way!

I am homeschooling ny 6 year old his year. Love your insight! Upvoted!

That is wonderful! I would love to read about some insights you learn along the way.

It's all the important things that they didn't teach us.

Yes! So many essential skills we lack, and they teach us about congruent triangles or the difference between a cirrus and a cumulonimbus clouds.

mmm I love this so much! Thank you for bringing more awareness

Thank you for enjoying this!

Great guy ! being a teacher I realised the defects of theoretical education system. Your post is very practical and enovative one. I will definitely try to apply your suggestions in my school.

It's nice that someone who is inside education system also finds that it needs to change. I'm glad you found some inspiration in this article!

Work sucks the fun out of life, too. Just showing up to a job we barely tolerate, being around people who are miserable, just to earn a meager paycheck and never get ahead. It takes the enjoyment out of life and makes us grow old, bitter, and dull.

Indeed, typical 9 to 5 that people tolerate just so that someone squeeze them some money at the end of the month is another life drainer.

It's definitely killing me... an agonizingly long, slow, death.

I don't know your situation so I'm guessing it is tough. It also might be a good opportunity to start planning something else for the future.

Yes, I am making other plans for the future. I believe Crypto currencies will be huge one day, so I am investing in several coins on the market right now.

It's a bit risky, but it might pay out greatly. Good luck!

Great list man! I totally agree! They (school) just follow their protocol and study program and that's it.
But i do remember one class in my first year of college that was a bit different. The professor really did a great job showing us some things i'll never forget and giving us some really useful life tips so i was lucky i had at least that !

Yeah, those are rare and precious. Sadly, most of them just follow the corrupt system.
