Often I don't know my mind is working on an idea, often a random comment takes root and just enjoys the warm fuzzy depths of my subconcious. It will stay there unnoticed as it slowly evolves and grows unobserved, waiting to push itself forward as an indea.
Now many people have talked, wrote, summerised about how their life would be different if they had turned left instead or right, not gone out on the night they met their partner. In general it's how small decisions could had totally changed your life for better or worse. It's the whole viewing all your parallel universes, alternate realities questions of how life could be changed around you just by chosing a slightly different path.
What if that change in your life had happened much earlier?
I'm talking before you were born earlier...
What if that turning left instead of right had been you being the opposite sex?
Now if you're a man your first though would be to grab your boobs that you would now have... but in fact would you?
Lets face it the chances are your parents would have brought you up very different. Your entire mindset and personalitiy would be radically diffrerent but even if somehow we could keep those 2 things that make you you there is still how the wider world would have treated you. Though your childhood, teenage years and into adulthood society would have treated you different, judged you different. There is even the fact that women think differently to men.
How would the social constraint, or freedoms of being born of the opposite sex affect the way you would react or deal with life.
How would your major life events be different? Lets just take love and work.
First love, marriage, number of children... this would be a major change in the sex of people you are attracted to and there is a good chance your attitude to sex would be very different as male and female emotions and attitudes are different. There would also be the social attitude to how you are seen and judged by your sexual activities. Your views on the number of childeren would probably be very different if you were to be the one to carry them, or not carry them.
In work, well men and women are treated very differently here too, how would this have changed you and what job or how sucessful you are. Would you even have fallowed the same career path, enjoyed the same subjects at school?
In short if you met you as the other sex would you recognise you?
Would you even like you?
If you sat down to talk would you share the same views on life, politics, religion and how society is in general?
Would you be the better person as a man or a woman ? Or could it be possible that your personality and mindset could survive it's social conditioning to be you, but in a different body.
And one last question, if your partner had also been born the opposit sex do you think you would still have got together?
You forgot one more question “What if another of your father’s spermatozoons would reach your mother’s egg earlier than yours?”

How much of you would you still be?

Most likely not much. You'll become one of your possible siblings. That is if we are not to believe in astrology and predetermination. If we do then it alleviates most of these questions anyway.

But if you believe in a unique soul that returns over different lives then you would be you still.

You are right. Some people can believe this as well. In fact, this could be a plot for an interesting story. A soul traveling or souls distributed into different bodies or maybe several different souls competing for a limited number of bodies. Something like this.

Hehe, hard to tell. But I do think that the real difference between man and woman is very small. If you have a sister or brother I think that it would be a very good indication of how you would be, or more precise how different you would be. Because if you share a lot with your sibling of the opposite sex: interests, learned abilities (sowing, carpentry), if you take the same decisions with your children - you could conclude how much difference were made because of your sex. Of course there would be a thousand other thing s to add and subtract, but you might just see some of the things. I think that many of these differences are cultural and that they differ very much from family to family. In my family the men have always taken care of the children. There are many men compared to women, and there is certainly a viking macho culture amongst us, but the thing about women being best at bringing up the children have never been taken seriously by any of us. My grandmother never stood up at night to change a diaper, my grandather always did. All she had to do was putting a pillow behind her and wait for the baby to be delivered clean and dry. Then she did the breastfeeding... There are some limits to our capabilities after all.

I have 2 brothers but we all have very different personalities and to an extent views of the world. So how would our personal personalities and views change between being male and female?
A thought that just occured as I typed this is identical twins of different sex, maybe they would be closest to providing my answers.

With thought experiments like this there is a legion of fallacies you must navigate and one thing is sure, you will never get to any solid conclusion. But maybe the fact that you differs so clearly between the three of you shows that you do not consider sex as important? You did not write there is a big difference between you and your two brothers.

Thought experiment.... I love the sound of that, so much better than random thoughts of a twisted mind.

I always thought identical twins couldn't be different genders, but apparently they can. It's extremely rare though. I have cousins that are fraternal twins. The boy stayed in his home town, married, had children. The girl left NZ and went to London straight after getting her degree, and still lives there. She never had children, though in her 50s she did fall in love and get married to a man 20 years older. She was as surprised as everybody else by that unexpected turn of events. So in their cases, I don't know that their lives would have been radically different based on gender.
Though I think our family might be a bit odd as far as marriage and kids goes anyway. Out of my siblings and cousins on both sides of the family, there are 11 female and 16 male. 5 of the women have never married (or married late) or had children. but only 3 of the men haven't. Is that unusual? Not that it has anything much to do with the original topic...
