The Bloody Church Service : How I Escaped Death

Bishops all seated For The Consecration

The date was 10th December 2016. As I walked out of the church premises here in Uyo, feeling a bit nauseated, all I could remember was my kid siblings whom I left at home.

I couldn't speak much for want of strength, all I thought of was how my feeble legs would be able to carry me home, at least to meet with my family.

It was the consecration of my pastor as a Bishop and more than 5000 people were sitted in the building which was yet to be complete, no-one saw any calamity coming.

The whole program was going on as planned, but just before the ordination proper, a deep loud crack was heard and before one could say jack, the whole building came crashing on thousands.

The Collapsed Church Building

How I managed to run out unhurt was totally unexplainable to me, I stood outside for few hours as the emergency team removed dead bodies too numerous to count. I felt like throwing up.

So many people dead in just a few seconds.
What then was life? Emptiness indeed!
All I heard myself shouting was "I am a survivor! "
Truly I was!

My State Governor escaped death by the whiskers, his seat was already kept, awaiting his entrance into the collapsed building, but sadly however one of his aides died instantly by a direct hit of the heavy roofing metals. It was quite a sad day for the church in Nigeria and my state.

The Governor's Broken Seat

Each time the thoughts of that day resurfaces, I get very frightened, had it not been for that phone call that took me out of the church building that eventful day I would have as well been dead.

I wouldn't have known steemit, neither would my dreams even be fulfilled. It's exactly a year and two months since the gory incident took the church in Nigeria by shock and storm, so I recommend that every kind of building whether it is private residence, religious building, governmental agencies, etc. be completely inspected and approved by certified engineers before people are allowed to use such facilities.

May the souls of the faithful departed through the mercies of God rest in peace. It's really a thanksgiving Sunday for me.

The experience wasn't good at all. Thank God for that, who expected death. But we have no choice than to continue serving him. Your life was preserved for a purpose @ambdavid

I agree dear. God bless you

Certainly I feared going to church for a couple weeks after that incident

Me too Hahaha

It was a tragedy.
I never knew you were there, it's good to have you alive

Thanks so much

Not to downplay the tragedy or anything, I just sometimes get caught up on minor details... So...

Why are that one guy's pants half off in the last image?

That's one of the people who incidentally died in the eventuality.
There was an attempt to rescue him and save his life, he Just needed to receive Fresh air, at that point anything was to be done to save him, even removing his heavy dresses.

That's the reason @telos
Thanks so much for stopping by

That explains it, thanks! It just seemed strange given the circumstances but that makes sense...

Okay, thank you too

Thank you dearly, I appreciate your kind words.

I'm so sorry for the loss of life in this incident, @ambdavid. You surely have lived through a lot of traumatic things in your life so far. It is sobering to consider how your life was spared. How sad for those families who lost members that day. Thank you for sharing something so close to your heart. I will remember you in prayer often.
