Howdy Steemit,
In order to try to get some funds to Haiti quickly, I put out this article inviting folks to give. Right now I just want to give an update.
Jean Rony went up to Happy Dog. As you may recall from my regenerative series, it's his childhood home, where his parents still live and the main location where I am hoping to begin a regenerative project to heal the ecology of the land.
What he saw there was heartbreaking. His parents have two small houses (probably sheds for most of us). One is completely devastated. The other has major damage. But his parents are well.
This is what's left of the church, one of the larger buildings on the mountain. This is just an example of a food providing tree now gone forever. They'll be able to eat those bananas, but there will be no more coming. Avocado, mango, abricot, coconut and other staples in their diets are gone. Crops are ruined. Animals have disappeared or been found dead.
The following pictures pretty much speak for themselves.
I received this message from Jean Rony tonight:
Dear Friends, the hurricane left a trail of destruction over many parts of Haiti, on La Gonave Island we do not know the full extent of damage or casualties as many roads are cut off. I managed to visit Happy Dog in the mountains, the damage is awful, extensive, the people have lost their homes, crops, livestock, and the churches are destroyed or damaged. We want to focus our efforts on helping the people of Happy Dog with their immediate needs - food, water and temporary shelter. If you can help, please donate via Paypal at communityandchildhaiti.ca (a Canadian NPO for La Gonave Island) God Bless you, Jean Rony Toussaint ASHOG La Gonave Island, Haiti
Honestly, I am quite saddened by this and really don't know what else to say. Sitting at home with no real tangible way to get there and do any good is discouraging and frustrating.
Any Steem/SBD from this post will be sent to help. Other options for donating can be found here. We're trying to work on a way to get clothing and other such items there, but as of now I don't have an address where they could be sent.
Thank you for your concern and love for the Haitians of La Gonâve.
Sad, but Steemin' on,
Another Joe

Thanks! We should get together with @steemitcharity and consolidate efforts. I've been talking to them about this too.
