Finally, we found our own appartment in Budapest!

in life •  7 years ago

Well, that was a challenge, and I am so glad finally we can say we move in to our own appartment for long term now. We have arrived in Budapest half of September (moved from Spain) when my boyfriend found a job here. At first we stayed at his collegues house, thankfully he helped us out, because the company makes a mess of these kind of stuff (as it is a startup here in Budapest, but it is a big multinational company).

After a while it was not doable anymore to stay there, and the company made many promises to help with housing, my boyfriend was working his ass off in the meanwhile. And the stresslevel kept going up and up every day. Then thankfully a collegue hooked us up with a friend of his, who ownes some appartments here in Budapest, and we could instantly move in to one of these.

The appartment was so much better than every house we lived in the last years, but high rent every month, but for the sake of our bloodpressure we took it right away. We knew it was only temporary until the first of february, and could not registrate here, but at least we had some peace at mind now.

And then Christmas came, only 2 days before Christmas the owner let us know he sold the other 2 appartments he had, and he wants to live here in this one. How much more stress can you get, just days before Christmas? He told us the end of January some people from the Netherlands will come to visit and we have to be gone by then. Just what we needed, an even tighter deadline than 1st of February!

We were looking for other places, and not one of them was suited, some of them were way smaller than this one we are in now, and the rent + overhead costs passed this price with 100 euro or so. Not an option, because the whole idea was to have lower costs instead of higher.. We had another visitation to a house where the view was truly stunning! But the costs.. unbelievable.. so we passed.

We talked to the owner of this appartment and told him we hope we can pay weekly from now on, so we have the money to pay rent and deposit when we do find an appartment here. Because here in Budapest it usually goes to the first one that pays 3 months rent (2 are deposit) and then gets the keys. So we had to make sure we can leave anytime. This was no problem, luckily.

But then the trouble started, suddenly there was a problem in the kitchen. Right when my dinner was ready in the oven, it fell out. And no electricity contact worked anymore, but the weird thing was the cooking plate worked, but the contacts for electricity in the bedrooms (!) did not work either. And the toilet had no light anymore. Something was obviously not put on the right group of electricity I guess.

Normally you can easily fix this, as the fuse of the group hit by electricity problems falls out. Just put back on the switch and it works again. But all the fuses were normal. No safety thing happened when something went wrong. I guess it is not that safe like this also. The owner promised to call someone for the problems. But days later, nothing happend. And I noticed by using the cooking plate for only heating up some water fell out several times. I am a bit afraid to use it, because who knows what else will fall out when something goes wrong there? Now we can still use everything in the livingroom, but if something goes wrong here, we cannot even power up our phones and use internet/tv.

Luckily we went to visit another appartment yesterday, which is THE appartment for us. We can get the keys the end of this month, so we thought we only had to arrange an AIRBNB or something for 3 nights. But the appartment here is cold (heating did not work from the moment we moved in). And I am afraid to use the electric heaters (because they may cause problems as they use lots of power each).

So today we decided it is better we move in to an temporary appartment tomorrow until we get our keys, because then we have back all the comfort we pay for. With a little girl of almost 2 it is not a great feeling that you cannot use half the items in the house, because there may be electricity problems..

So today I am packing and tomorrow we hope we can agree when we look at the temporary place and then I can leave this stressfull place behind. The owner wanted to move in asap, so thats good for him. And we don't have to pay full rent for an appartment where we cannot even cook normally and cannot even use electricity in the bedrooms. The owner can now deal with this problem himself, and I guess as he will be living here, then he will be fast letting someone fix this all of the sudden.

Because now it is only our problem, then it will be his again. I am very happy that we found are own place, and can't wait until the end of the month. The appartment is so our taste! Everything is clean and looks brandnew. We agreed with the girl that lives there now, to buy here stuff for a very very good price. So all we have to do, is take our suitcases and move in!

What a blessing this is. Now looking for furniture, no putting drawers together from IKEA or something haha, and no stress about finding a fridge or washing machine. It is right there for us! The owner of the house told us she will probably buy it from us when we move out, so that's good.

Now back to packing, and hopefully everything will go smoothly !
