I have been using Librivox for a while now for my kids' education and just recently realized how wonderful it is for me as well! I was in a Facebook group recently and they were talking about books for Mommy to listen to on Librivox, so I took note. No subscription is necessary and there are even apps that you can download to your phone, or listen right from the website.
Listen as you go throughout your day:
I have never felt like I have enough time to listen to audio books, so I have never looked into them. This week, I started listening to a book and I just love it! I found time to listen while making dinner, brushing my teeth, and doing all the other mindless tasks I do. Believe it or not, I bet you have some time to listen to audio books too!
Listen to learn another language:
Use librivox to find books in another language to listen to them. What better way to improve your pronunciation or vocabulary than listening to a native speaker read stories you may already be familiar with. This is on my list of things to do to improve my Spanish.
Listen to classics you missed growing up:
Librivox is made up of books that are in the public domain. This means most, if not all of them, are classics and their copy right has expired, so they are free to be published and broadcast to the public. Some great examples of this include Uncle Tom's Cabin, Oliver Twist, Anne of Green Gables, Jane Austen books, Beatrix Potter books, and so much more! If you missed something growing up and do not have enough time to read it now, check out Librivox and listen to it. These are all on my list as I missed them in high school!
Listen to some of your favorite classics:
Do you remember reading through A Little Princess or Robin Hood growing up and loving them? Relive them on Librivox for free! There are so many classic books to choose from, I am sure you will find something you love now or have loved in the past.
Not all readers are created equally:
I am not a great read-aloud reader and I would make a terrible reader for Librivox. All the readers are volunteers, so you will get some who are good and some who are not so good. The group suggested some specific readers they enjoy listening to which includes: Karen Savage, Kara Shallenberg, Mark Smith, Elizabeth Klett, John Lieder, Tadhg, Gruelle and a few others. These are on my list!
If you do not feel like you have time to read, this is a great alternative.
You can listen in the car, you can listen at the bar.
You can listen with a cat, you can listen on a mat.
You can listen here and there, you can listen anywhere!
If you are interested, I am currently listening to Stepping Heavenward (second version). My kids are listening to The Merry Adventures of Robin Hood. Check it out, you will be glad you did!
What will you be listening to first?

This is really cool... I will totally be using this app, I had no idea it existed! And I love the idea of volunteer readers too. You might hear me reading one of these days...

Oooh @apanamamama
This is so great useful info. Thanks a lot, would be checking out Librivox for sure, I'm pretty sure I'll be hooked on it, even.
I love books in all forms and I'm sure gonna have time to do as little as listening, 'specially now I've seen its free.

Hahahahaha. Great. I told my little brothers about this name, they all love it, we're now calling a lot of things a Panama thing, Like a Panama ice cream, etc. Just for fun.

Lol - good fun. I liked it because every other letter is an "a." A Panama Papa would work too. ;)

I'd like informational books about a number of things, including theology, history, culture - but from a non-standard context. I actually listen to YouTube discussions, radio broadcasts, etc... this way. I open another screen, and just listen to the discussion.

Nice - thanks for sharing. There are tons of books on librivox. You should give it a look. I know they have some older theology books and history! Thanks for commenting.

I really enjoy listening to audio books. I'm not always able to sit and look at a book, but I can listen while driving or working. Thanks for sharing! @ironshield

You're welcome! :) Yeah, I've just realized how I can listen while doing other things (unless the kids are acting loud or trying to get my attention). ;)
