Wild Iguanas and Black Squirrels in David, Panama

in life •  7 years ago

Wild iguanas and black squirrels inhabit a local park here in Panama. We have driven by it many times in the past, but never stopped. The other day we had to turn in our car to get the air conditioner fixed and then walk around the town, so we decided to stop by the park. It was pretty cool to watch these creatures!

Apparently someone feeds the iguanas and squirrels around the same time every day. They seem to have just eaten when we arrived, but they were still looking for food. The squirrels were funny because they would hang from their hind feet and reach down really far to see if anyone was offering food.

There was a man sitting there, like I assume he does most days, keeping an eye on the animals. He would tell people not to feed them certain foods because it would hurt them. He also was able to call them over by holding out his hand.

This guy was a massive iguana! He walked around and people were pretty interested in him. You could pet his tail, but we weren't really sure of him, so we stayed back! He even walked by a man and started trying to eat his red shirt. That guy jumped off of the place he was sitting pretty quickly!!

I would say this iguana was about three feet long. He had a very long tail that the kids said feels like a snake! He had some long fingers and a beard as well.

After a little while, they got tired of none of us having a treat for them, so they headed up the tree. There were already a bunch up in the trees. I have no idea how many iguanas live at this park, but I would imagine there are at least 100 of them! There were quite a few squirrels as well (which is not very common in this area).

So if you're ever walking around in the 95 degree heat of David, Panama, be sure to check out the center park which has these fun iguanas and black squirrels. And be sure to bring them a snack of some nuts and fresh fruit! I am sure you would draw quite a crowd!

Cool! We don't have black squirrels in Minnesota and definitely no iguanas! If you want some variation, though, we'd gladly send our plethora of red, gray, and brown squirrels your way :-)

I wonder how long it took the iguanas to train the humans to bring them food.

I've never seen iguana and black squirrels!!! They are so beautiful! Mom told me, that when I was little, at our cottage lived red squirrels and we fed them with his hands seeds)) I regret that I did not keep those memories

Lovely photos! I love squirrels. I've seen grey and red ones, but never black – though I've heard that there are some black ones in parts of England. Squirrels have very sharp teeth, and I know someone who was badly bitten by one while feeding it, so beware!
I also adore iguanas. I've only seen one close-up, when I visited Costa Rica. I photographed it and it took fright, leaping off a wall and soaring beautifully, which I never knew they could do. I also never realised that iguanas sat in trees! I think I'll have to visit Panama someday.
