The rationalization of consumption is one of the most important pillars on which sound societies are based. It is mentioned in the Holy Quran: "And [they are] those who, when they spend, do so not excessively or sparingly but are ever, between that, [justly] moderat" [Al-Furqan: 67] Such as water and electricity, the rationalization of the consumption of medicines, and the rationalization of the consumption of food that we will address through this subject, since food is one of the essential items that can not be dispensed with.

The rationalization of food consumption is the optimal consumption of food, the balance and the moderation of spending without waste, in order to preserve food and be available to all individuals. The rationalization of food consumption is followed by a series of conscious actions and plans that guide the individual to the optimal way of consumption.

Ways to rationalize food consumption

  • To raise awareness among members of society about the importance of rationalizing food consumption and its role in dealing with economic crises and food shortages prevalent in many countries around the world.

  • Not being influenced by commercials that promote luxury products that are not really needed by the individual.

  • The price of commodities and foodstuffs, especially in times of scarcity, may be bought and stored for a period of time. For example, the prices of some commodities may be reduced in certain seasons, such as tomatoes. In this case, the consumer can buy large quantities of tomatoes, When the price of tomatoes rises.

  • Non-excessive consumption of food, estimating the special needs of each family member, not cooking large quantities of food, and avoiding cooking more than one item per meal.

  • Purchase basic needs and quantities without increase, especially with regard to vegetables and fruits, where it is recommended to buy quantities suitable for a week, because they are perishable and may damage before use.

  • Choosing food items that fit family income, it is unreasonable to buy expensive cuisine when income is low.

  • Choose food with health benefits, be careful to choose undamaged fruits and vegetables, so stay as long as possible.

  • Buy food and wholesale goods because they are more than enough to buy them, and in a quantity sufficient for a month, taking into consideration leaving part of the water for fresh food.

  • Know the goods and food in terms of quality and price.

  • Know the alternatives to commodities, which can be used in the event of high price or disappearance of the market.

  • Take advantage of leftover food instead of getting rid of it.

  • Avoid cutting large pieces of fruits when peeling.
