Hibiscus Sugar For Tea

Hawaiian hibiscus are in full bloom right now! They look ever so beautiful on the bush they grow on but being that we've all had lingering colds for a while I decided to pick some of these big gorgeous blooms to make hibiscus sugar to add to our lemon or mint tea.

Hawaiian hibiscus blooms have been used for ages to aid with cramping and with any bronchial ailments. I am guessing it's because of the mucilage content they contain that is soothing to throats and the lungs. The leaves have so much soapy mucilage they were once pounded with spring water to make "shampoo"!

To make my hibiscus sugar I pick the nicest open blooms and remove the green stem. I rinse them off pretty good, making sure no dust, dirt or tiny pests remain. Please make sure when making this and any natural preparation you do not use plants that are sprayed with any pesticide. I have an organic garden so my only worry is tiny aphids and ants lol
I set them off to air dry a bit on a clean towel or paper napkin.

When they are pretty dry chop them up coarsely and layer with organic coconut sugar or any sugar of your choice in a glass jar. I prefer organic coconut sugar for this "concoction" as I feel it draws more of the liquidy good stuff than using honey. Plus coconut=Hawaii? lol

Keep layering...

When you fill up the jar put the lid on it and place it in the refrigerator for at least 1 week. Poke it around, I use a chopstick, twice a day for a week. You will notice the sugar taking up a lovely bluish violet shade as the time progresses! So lovely!
When it's ready I like to use a teaspoon or two with some lemon tea. Not only does it look beautiful it adds some soothing properties when you have a cough or cold.

I hope you are all feeling well!

Anything special you like to drink when you're under the weather?

This is wonderful! The steps are clearly outlined. I would like to put this into practice. But I have one worry, is it just for Huawaiian Hibiscus or one can use any hibiscus you find anywhere in the world?

Hello! Any hibiscus is OK and even rose petals just make sure whatever bloom you decide to use it’s non-toxic and comes from a pesticide free area. ☺️

OK now you have cleared my doubt. I am sure I will try that one day
