Because of the many diverse responses, to my last post on ego, I thought I should delve a little more into the topic.
Good and bad EGO connotations:
- Good: At the outset an ego fuels and strengthens your confidence to set and achieve goals, and helps you to overcome trials and tribulations bravely.
- Bad: But an over-inflated ego can give the impression of been arrogant, which can make a person somewhat unpopular. And been unpopular can restrict you in so many ways.
Secretly:
Most of us want to be popular and have plenty of friends. So we strive to be socially acceptable.
Connotation of the word Humble:
- Basically, most people think been humble means been poor, having low-esteem, lack of intelligence and not of any importance. And often it’s the case, been gentle and meek, you’re `looked-down-upon’ or taken you’re an `easy-push-over-job’.
- Because we don’t want to look stupid, pathetic or be take advantage of, what do we do? We try looking and sounding intelligent and very successful. And to be successful, we work hard and do all we can do, to achieve success, do well in business, etc.
The fact is…
Humility is an inner strength, not a weakness:
- Humility not only means kindly assisting and thoughtfully understanding others, whoever they may be, but been honest.
- Knowing who and what you are, gives you the confidence to be honest with yourself. Accepting yourself and knowing what you stand for, helps you overcome inadequacies. Not having to prove anything to anybody, means you can be who you are, without stress of what people may think of you.
- Having this strong inner energy and character, gives you the wisdom to quietly achieve things without losing logic or temper. Things get done in a calm, orderly manner and atmosphere.
Here is a short story:
There was once a chap who worked hard to start a business.
His business was based on his skills, talent and high business acumen to start with. With the taste of success, he thought his firm was doing well all because of him.
Then he wanted to expand his business. But that meant he had to hire people. He interviewed quite a few, but wasn’t satisfied with the applicants. They didn’t meet his requirements.
The reason they didn’t come up to par was because he was judging them wrongly. He didn’t want them to be smarter than himself. That could have made him look silly in front of them.
Then he grasped the fact that it was by the grace of God his firm had done so well up till then. Not him.
And that his skills, ego and charm only went so far. He actually needed smart guys overseeing departments and skilled people in the areas where he didn’t have skills.
That was an eye-opener for him. He realized he would have to down-size his ego if he wanted this business to flourish.
He finally understood, his success up till that point, had given him confidence. Confidence that would help him run the firm with humility and not feel threatened by those who were smarter than himself.
The staff he gathered around him was highly skilled and intelligent, each in their own field. And they integrated so well together as a team.
The result was that, not only did his business flourish, but it became one of the biggest concerns, on an international scale!

I think the root cause of all evils today is more greed and less humanity. It has led us to fatal things. Ego is other thing which is derailing humans from other humans,we dont care about fellow humans,we are stuck in our own phases of life just try to be more successful with whatever consequences, we need introspect and look inside us to see fellow humans happy and be helpful to everyone to make a better world

I think you are right about the good and the bad connotations of ego.
I have personally experienced that your own ego when channeled right can provide you with impetus that you would normally be afraid to summon. On the other hand one has to take care about not letting it guide you in making decisions. In fact once ego is a part of their sense of self.

I believe ego is killing us more than what our bad tongue does. We need to be in humility so that our lives are full of contentment and peace. I think we are looking for too much in short span. In that race we crush many other humans, we need to be patient

The ego is only an illusion, but a very influential one. Letting the ego-illusion become your identity can prevent you from knowing your true self. Ego, the false idea of believing that you are what you have or what you do, is a backwards way of assessing and living life.
Politeness is the flower of humanity.

If we are to grow in love, the prisons of our egoism must be unlocked. This implies suffering, constant effort and repeated choices

People with most ego are the ones who are shallow inside.
To hide that fact they tend to put up a facade to make them look proud.
But on the other hand the people that are way too humble are picked upon. There should be a balance between the two. I'm not saying you need to have ego, I'm just saying you need to have confidence in yourself while being humble.

Absolutely... Humility doesn't mean that you r weak or poor.. But in today's world if u come up with Humility, people think u are weak and look down upon u... This is the sad reality today... So there should be a perfect balance between the Humility, humbleness and good ego...

"Not having to prove anything".
Exactly. Deep down the need to prove ourselves has always to do with a lack of Self-Love. "I love you as much as I love myself instead of "I love myself as much as I love you" should be our directive, realizing that we can give Love to others only to the extend we love ourselves and not vice versa.
Exactly this happens with achievement, as placing ourselves second means we are not in alignment with our own unique path and instead attempt to mimic others' path. We are actually disparaging our uniqueness.

You are right. We each have strengths and weaknesses. This is what makes the world so interesting. Where I maybe weak and another is strong in that area. And so we can support each other, to make a better world, if folks only stopped to realize it.

Great story. The Tech world is full of ego-maniacs. I do not think that will ever change. It is part of the human condition. Whenever a group of people in society have a skill or talent that far surpasses everyone else this happens. Thanks for the enlightening share.

The kind of people that all teams need are people who are humble, hungry, and smart: humble being little ego, focusing more on their teammates than on themselves. Hungry, meaning they have a strong work ethic, are determined to get things done, and contribute any way they can. Smart, meaning not intellectually smart but inner personally smart.

The main moral of everything is balance. All is useful - if you know the measure and observe the balance. The human ego can serve as a certain motivator and gain confidence. But it can also be destructive if it is too high.
These are the true words. I saw people who have peace and successfully make a decision. Strength in humility and tranquility. I agree with you
Very instructive story that you described. We all need help. This is normal.
Thank you, excellent post

Ego has its place but it becomes bad when someone wants to equate themselves with God.

Your last post about ego was interesting and so is this one, and that story.
Have realized, humility encourages taking on difficult actions without any worry of how people would perceive you supposing you failed.
Ego on the other hand can stop you from taking on challenges because you can feel your ego would be hurt when you fail. So in most cases people with very big egos tend to settle for something a little less from what they could have achieved.
Failure to admit mistakes too is a thing for the egocentric.
Thanks for this one again.

An ego in certain quantity can make you do wonders but if it exceeds the certain amount, at one point it will drown you and make you hit the bottom of the sea from where there is no coming back.
