Gone Fishing: A Short Photographic Story, Volume II

in life •  8 years ago  (edited)

Another week passed and another opportunity to get out on the coastal inland waters was seized.

In my previous post on the subject, Gone Fishing: A Short Photographic Story of My Yesterday, I shared some images of my fishing expedition on a windy and rainy day. We had quite a bit of luck, hauling in many fish and being able to keep four of them, despite less than ideal above-water conditions. Yesterday, we hit the water again, this time on a perfect sunny day with mild winter temperatures in the low 70s.

Here is the photographic story from this week, with some added commentary.

We pushed off in the early morning again, just before sunrise. The large, full moon was setting as the boat was going into the water. Upon arriving at one of the “honey holes,” this was the view.

This is the view from the front of the boat, looking east.

As the sun was breaking through the early morning clouds, I took this shot looking south. The water was glassy for most of the morning.

When the sun came out, it was pretty intense. The glassy water, while being perfect for boating, was not so perfect for seeing. Even a camera can go blind when looking directly at it (I think). Don’t stare at this image for too long or you might go double-blind.

After we raced back to the marina to pick up a friend, we headed back to our spot to find the conditions pretty much unchanged.

We put our lines in the water and waited for bites.

And it didn’t take long to get one! This is a beautiful redfish (that I had mentioned in last week’s post). It was just shy of the legal “slot,” so we threw him back to grow bigger for next time. This one was right around 16 inches long. The blue-tipped tail is more pronounced on the young fish and it really adds some nice flair to the usually reddish-gold color. The black spots by its tail can also vary in size and number. Some fishing tournaments even award prizes for the number of spots – the higher the better.

After our first catch, it’s tradition to start drinking beers. That wasn’t our first (we got a bigger one earlier)...and we were drinking before we caught it anyway. This was the beer of choice for today’s adventure.

Other than those two fish, we weren’t getting much other than nibbles, so we changed locations.

We were able to pull in a few trout (I’ll need to get a picture next time), but only one that was large enough to keep, so we headed back down the waterway to another location and set up shop for the evening’s low tide.

No luck here either. We went back to the original honey hole until dark. Again – no luck. But the views weren’t bad as the sun was setting. I was able to snap this one before the light was completely gone.

Altogether, it was a great day to be out. I did get a little too much sun on my face – the reflection off the water makes sun-burning much quicker. Also - fishing after a full moon doesn’t usually work out too well, according to my fish-master friend, so we might try to avoid that next time, or at least lower our expectations.

I did use some of my earnings from Steemit to pay for a few of our “supplies” for this outing. I can’t think of many better ways to spend my earnings than to be outdoors with friends and beers. I’ll try to make something like this a regular event and blogging experience. Maybe I’ll even be able to teach my readers something of value to them.

I hope you enjoyed these images and my brief story. I might have more next week, so stay tuned.

Awesome @ats-david
But not the fishing!

I take it you don't like fish? Or you don't like the taking of fish life?

I've only caught 1 in my whole life..so I've crossed it off in my list ;)

5 tags is now working ;)

Oh how I wish this story was mine, to be on the boat and casting a line.

I would love to be there sitting with you, maybe even having a brew. I apprecaite the post and appreciate your time, that you took god sir in readying my rhyme.

Have an awesome day! This is something I would love to be doing, these are the kinds of stories I love reading.

Steem on my friend!

Thanks for stopping by
To enjoy this story of mine
And sharing your little rhyme
About your appreciation of me.

If I were to ever meet with you,
We'd have to have that brew
And share a story or two
While we catch a fish or three.

So thanks for what you say.
I'll have that awesome day
And try to figure out a way
To share more of these stories.

Not even 7am and I am already beeming with a smile spread across my face!

Thanks for this it really made my day!

Looks like a nice place to be, even without the fishing.

It certainly has its moments. I often complain that it's not cold enough in the winter, especially around the holidays, but days like this make it not so bad.

Now if only I could figure out how to keep temperatures like this in the middle of summer...

Hm. Isolating suit, Peltier heat pumps, water cooling from the lake to dissipate the heat, big batteries, scribble on beer mat ...
Yes, doable.

Great pictures and nice post. I love a good fishing story! Are those redfish the only types you catch out there?

No, we can get reds, trout, flounder, sheepshead, black drum, mangrove snappers, bluefish, and a whole host of "garbage" fish (the usually not eaten varieties) just in the areas where we typically go. In nearby locations, we can also get sea bass, snook, and tarpon. All of these are inshore.

A couple of miles east is the Atlantic ocean and a ton of additional fish.

Nice. I do quite a bit of trout fishing in the mountains around where we live. Those sheepshead sure have some gnarly teeth eh? :)

Pretty solid teeth they have...but such a gentle bite. They can be very elusive.

I can't believe this is from yesterday! I'm in Chicago. Needless to say I am VERY jealous... but also happy for you. This looks like a n awesome way to spend the day. Friends and beers sound great. If I suggested the "outside" part right now, a friend would punch me in the face.

I would be willing to trade a day like this for one cold snowy day. Just one - then we'll take it from there. I'm nostalgic for my childhood days of sledding and snowball fights, but I'm not sure how much I'd actually enjoy that all winter long as an adult.

It's also important to not suggest outdoor days in the snow to your friends except through texts or phone calls. It makes face-punching much more difficult.

My friends are resourceful, they'd find a way lol.

I completely get that. I think if I ever did move someplace warm, I'd want to go for a weekend to take my kids sledding or something... then I'd go right back to the warmth and taunt my friends with pictures of me at a pool.

Really cool, that's one of my hobbies :)

Awesome. Do you usually fish saltwater or freshwater?

I like both. But because distance to sea is very close from my house, so I more often fishing at the sea, here :)

Oh, very nice! Did you eat the snapper?

I know a thing or two about fishing.

Well, mostly whaling though, right?

Don't get him started.
Please.

Shut up. We're having a discussion. You're not invited.

Started with fresh water, worked my way up to saltwater.
My first catch was a bluegill.

Yeah, if you want to get the bigger ones, use your leg as bait.

I'm gonna get you, you bastard.

So beautifull :)

Thanks!

I envy you. Just want a calm place to relax :)

It isn't always enviable - like when you come home empty-handed, but it's too late to cook anything and you end up ordering a pizza. It can be very disappointing and demoralizing. But even on those days, it's mostly relaxing, so I get your point. I'll try not to rub it all in too much.

At the end, what matter the most is indeed not what you caught (or didn't) but the way you use the time to enjoy life and relax :)

Yep. I certainly can't argue with that!

Great photos, looks like a good day out for sure.

Phone / camera tech really has come a long way

Have a good weekend David.

Yes, the tech is moving very quickly. On the new iPhone 7, I believe you can now adjust aperture settings and the focusing/zoom abilities are much better as well. I may need to upgrade soon.

man take me with u next time! haha looks like a good time!

The boat capacity is five. We usually fish with only two or three.

Beautiful photos, great iPhone camera!

Thanks! I'll probably upgrade it soon. I want to see how the 7 will do. The 6S is already better in many ways than my old Rebel XTi.

Amazing photos ! Beautiful

Wow, what a beautiful day. Been a while since I wetted a line. Made me yearn for it again. Thanks for sharing.

You can live vicariously through me, if you'd like. I'll probably be doing weekly outings and I'll try posting about it afterwards each week. Your yearning may become stronger.
