Ek kom uit Suid-Afrika en ek praat Afrikaans. In/op Engels is ek iemand anders. Ek dink aan my sinskonstruksie en wonder of ek 'n beter sinoniem kon gebruik. Ek hou skool in Kanada en die kinders lag oor my aksent. (O, hulle maak my soms kwaad.)
As die tieners in my klas my kwaad maak, gooi ek hulle met 'n goeie 5 minute van vlot vinnige Afrikaans. Soos: "Julle weet dit nie, maar ek het gister beet en wortels gesaai, nes my ouma Olga, in my kleintyd in Krugersdorp. Julle weet ook nie dat ek aan die einde van 'n lang dag se Engels praat, my grammatika verkeerd kry nie. Ek is nie ek in Engels nie want ek ken minder woorde en ek voel soos 'n "fake". Die kinders staar na my -- in stilte ( wat wonderlik is in 'n skool vol tieners: stilte). "Leer ons iets in juffrou se taal," vra hulle. "Lekker," antwoord ek en ek rol my "r" ekstra lank. En "karnallie". Dis wat mens 'n stoute Graad 8 seuntjie noem.

Ja dis moeilik. Maar dis moontlik. Dit kort baie uithou en aanhou en baie baie papierwerk -- soos in alle lande wat immigrante neem. Begin net iewers aansoek doen, voor jy werk soek. Kyk of jy genoeg "punte" het om in Kanada as "landed immigrant" te kan begin.
