Life can be based on either of two assumptions. One is that the obstacles, trials and sorrows are not a part of the pattern of life. There must be all warp and no woof in fabric of existence. Hence, in the face of annoyances one must either seek flight from existence through alcohol or habituates, or else blame all that happens on others. From this flow discords, revolutions and wars.

The second assumption is that everything that happens to us must be changed and transmuted by a Divine vision so that, instead of defeating, it rather aids us to mount to higher levels of peace. There are other ways of begetting life, we must remember, than physically. The most chaste way that life is begotten, is the way in which thoughts and ideas are born in the mind.
Life is monotonous if it has no goal or purpose. When we do not know why we are here or where we are going, then life is full of frustrations and unhappiness. When there is no goal or over-all purpose, people generally concentrate on motion. Instead of working forwards on ideal, they keep charging the ideal and calling it “progress”.
With all our knowledge of chemistry we cannot make a human life in our laboratories because we lack the unifying, vivifying principle of a soul which comes only from God. Life is not a push from below; it is a gift from above. It is not the result of the necessary ascent of man, but the loving descent of God. It is not the term of progress; it is the fruit of the incarnation.
To a great extent, the world is what we make it. We get back what we give. If we sow hate, we reap hate; if we scatter love and gentleness we harvest love and happiness.
Oh Steve... What a very nice write-up, you have said all.
