The apostle Paul in his letter to the Church of Rome dealt with numerous doctrinal issues, to bring the new believers of Rome closer to the christian faith and the doctrine of Jesus, and among those issues is the new life in our Lord.
Paul exposed in his letter the opposition between the figure of Adam and the figure of Jesus, through one man death entered the world, and through the other grace entered; according to Paul's thoughts, Jesus is that new Adam who comes to bring us that new life that opposes the death that Adam's sin produced.
With these words, Paul exposed in his epistle the spiritual issue of the condemnation and salvation of mankind:
"Consequently, just as one trespass resulted in condemnation for all people, so also one righteous act resulted in justification and life for all people. For just as through the disobedience of the one man the many were made sinners, so also through the obedience of the one man the many will be made righteous" Romans 5:18-19.
And then to deepen into the theme of the new life with Jesus, Paul explained the sacrament of baptism. The apostle compared the baptism with the death and resurrection of our Lord, by baptism we reject all forms of sin and accept the righteous life ("So in everything, do to others what you would have them do to you" Matthew 7:12). That is why Paul affirmed: "In the same way, count yourselves dead to sin but alive to God in Christ Jesus" Romans 6:11.
In other words, we cannot accept the way of Jesus if sin continues to be a habit or a custom in us, in the life in God's grace sin is the exception, and when the believer sins there is a purpose of amendment, this is the spiritual meaning of the new life, the eternal life, that is why Paul with wisdom said: "Therefore do not let sin reign in your mortal body so that you obey its evil desires" Romans 6:12.
The mystery of eternal life ultimately consists in recognizing in our hearts the sovereignty of God and his righteousness.
