in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

I'm gonna be honest with you. I was procrastinating all day before posting this article :P

(what an irony)

First of all I'm Bezandros ! A young student passionate about nature, technology, music , photography , theories about existence . Passionate about life ! I have big dreams and i try my best to achieve them ... well most of the time :/ I sometimes procrastinate and that isn't any good

1. What is procrastination ?

Napoleon Hill stated that

" Procrastination is the bad habit of putting off until the day after tomorrow what should have been done the day before yesterday"

Confused ? me too :P lets see what others say about procrastination

According to Wikipedia "Procrastination is the avoidance of doing a task that needs to be accomplished. ". It occurs when you have a certain task  to do and instead you choose to occupy your self with other less important or even time wasting stuff !!

Lets say for example I want to write an article and post it on Steemit . Instead of that I just go on the internet "just for a minute" to check your notifications on Facebook or Twitter  and I end up 3 hours later browsing for memes or watching funny cat video compilations on YouTube  (btw check out this hilarious video ) . This of course can apply to bigger things in life like studying for an exam, preparing a presentation, doing housework or even paying the bills (yikes!)

In the end I end up wasting my time and feeling tired to do anything else. So unproductive .... THIS HAS TO STOP NOW !!!

So, how do i stop procrastination ?

2. How to stop procrastination

In the flowing six steps you will learn how to effectively kill procrastination and start working on that more important task I'm sure you are now postponing while reading this article :P

STOP READING THIS ARTICLE AND GET TO WORK !!

Seriously ! stop reading this and get to work . Im sure you have been browsing the internet for some time now  . Maybe checking your Facebook notifications , liking your crush's posts (wait what ? :P ) , re-tweeting that famous's last tweet , watching "the most satisfying video ever" on YouTube or reading an article or two here on Steemit? You ended up finding my article after all :)

are you still here reading this? you little rebel :) i like you

MAKE A LIST

Its good to create a weekly or daily To-Do list .Then, start from the most urgent and important tasks and leave for last the least urgent or important ones . Its good to have a "done" list too so you can see the progress you are making .

LIMIT DISTRACTIONS

Make sure that you get rid of all possible distractions from the surrounding environment . For example if you have to study turn off the TV , close that Facebook tab , put your phone on silent and turn of its Wi-Fi and most important put it somewhere far away. That way you wont get in the temptation to check your notifications every few minutes or that Snap you just got  ;)

SET A DEADLINE

Another good idea to effectively kill procrastination is  setting a time limits for certain tasks. Tell yourself that this  task has to be done by a certain time . For example "i have to study the 3rd chapter by 5p.m" or " I must clean the house in an  hour" .  You can even make a timetable defining the specific time that the tasks have to be done by .Make sure to include some break time for resting and relaxing . In that way you prepare your self of what is coming and acknowledging that if you don't stick to that timetable many of the tasks wont be achieved .

REWARD YOURSELF

Now that you've set your timetable its time to set the rewards ! Yes , rewarding yourself after each task will keep you motivated while on the task. Rewards can be simple as being able to check your notifications (or that snap you got earlier), eating a snack or watching an episode of your favorite series (F.R.I.E.N.D.S) Just don't overdo it .

LISTEN TO SOME MUSIC

Last but not least listening to music can help you stay focused and limit some noises from the environment that could easily distract you from the work you are doing . Make sure to select soothing and calm music that doesn't distract you . Thousands of playlists can be found on Spotify and on YouTube by searching "calm music".

3. CONCLUSION

All in all procrastination is a nasty time eating monster that kills productivity. Although here are six simple steps I found to be working that help me stop procrastinating and achieving my goals!
