It's that popular saying again... "If I had a dollar (or probably in my case 1€) for every time (insert what you would be paid for) I would be rich."
In my case, I would be paid for answering people's questions. It also would not be one question - but many. Do you think it is acceptable in society to charge people for asking you questions? Yah girl needs new shoes... (the struggle)
The questions usually go as follows:
- Where do you come from? Now let me just tell you - this question is asked by my German customers. And occasionally Capetonians #SASquad. This question makes my heart drop a little. My cover is blown!! They know I'm not a true German. The only thing that gives it away (so people say) is my accent. Ugh.
- Really? You're from South Africa? But... You're white... I have nothing to say to this. Let's just move on to the next one...
- Does it snow there? Weather is always an interesting topic to discuss - especially because it is so different everywhere in the world! While it can snow in South Africa when it is extremely cold, I can never outright say that it snows in South Africa... Because snow means thick, white blankets of cold death 😬 ... Which we don't have in South Africa...
- Where in South Africa do you come from? "From Polokwane" I say and I am met with a blank, confused stare. "It's in the northern part of SA, about 3 hours from Johannesburg." "OOHHH OKAY! Cool!" South Africa apparently only consists out of Johannesburg and Cape Town (because of the wine).
- Do you surf? People automatically think that because I'm from South Africa I know how to/have gone surfing and that I live close to the beach. Hahahaha. No.
- Okay, so this one is kinda cheating... I was only asked this once: Your parents, are they um, you know... White too? Yip. Fun fact.
It's amazing to see what people think of different countries and cultures based off of what they've been exposed to or heard. This is usually just a pinch compared to the bigger, truer picture. Nonetheless, it is interesting and undeniably entertaining.
