Singing Bowls also known as Tibetan Singing Bowls are considered a type of bell, and gets classified as a standing bell.

However they look nothing like the stereotyped bell we have all come to know. They do not hang or have a handle attached to them with a mid-piece hanging down. In stead they look more like a fine decorated bowl that is usually made from hand hammered brass or brass alloy -(modern production techniques include sand casting.)

The sound of the singing bowl is produced by the rim of the bowl and has a very characteristic primary frequency known as the first harmonic, accompanied by two audible overtones known as the second and third harmonics. This is done by firstly tapping then lightly sliding a wooden striker ( a utensil resembling a pestle) around the edges of the bowl.
These melodies starts soft and works up to a harmonized tone.
