I believe that supply chain optimization does not start and end at your company's door. You need to make sure that you are helping your supplier optimize their supply to you. You need to understand how you are contributing to optimizing consumables for your customers. Hopefully, suppliers and customers are doing the same with their suppliers and customers, thereby helping to optimize the entire supply chain network.
