I used to be nuts for country-rock, like the Marshall Tucker Band, CDB, and the folk stuff of the Pure Prairie League… in the early ‘70s they had their biggest hit, Amie, which I could play the chords for and sing all three parts even when I was about 13 years old… later, when I became a radio disc jockey, it was an oldie I played a lot…
And later still, I used to sing it sweetly to my own angel on those warm summer nights.. whenever it came on the radio, we stopped everything and turned it up.
I could never quite remember that Vince Gill started as the front man for the Pure Prairie League… but just now I happened to run across a video of their live performance of that song about fifty years ago, and through the long hair and beard I recognized that face… and of course that wonderful voice…
Which made me remember meeting him in Cleveland after a concert… one of those memorable nights with my new bride, who loved to go backstage with me and meet the famous folk…
Here is Vince Gill in 1973, singing “Amie”…
