5 of My Favorite Documentaries Available on Youtube

in life •  8 years ago

To say im a big documentary watcher is an understatement. I would say that about half of the movies I watch are documentaries and I watch a lot of movies in a year, probably one every two days , so you can say ive seen my fair share of documentaries. Every now and then I want to make a little list for you out there and give 5 of my favorite documentaries and see where this takes us. I want to start out today with documentaries available on youtube so that if you are interested in watching any of them, you don’t have to pay for a service, torrent them ect. They are in no particular order, here we go.

#1. Japan a Story of Love and Hate

This documentary follows a middle aged Japanese man named Naoki and the struggles that he faces in Japan. He was rich during the boom in the 80s and lost all his money, his job and now relies on his younger girlfriend to support him. This documentary shows the darker side of Japan and how someone who doesn’t play by the rules can be cast out by society.

#2. Bangkok Girl

This documentary shows the life story of what happens to many Thailand girls who go to Bangkok and join the prostitution industry at a young age. The girl followed in this documentary joined the sex industry when she was 13 and it follows her as she goes deeper into the industry.

#3. Louis Weird Weekend, Exploring the Porn Industry
This documentary made in the late 90s explores the porn industry at the time in Los Angeles and how it operates. Louis Theroux as a bunch of great documentaries and I will most likely have more from him in the future. There is actually a follow up documentary to this one made in the semi recent past as well.

#4. Guy and Dolls
This documentary follows men and their relationships with “Real Dolls”, which are expensive hand made sex dolls. These men end up having relationships with these dolls and treat them as real people. It is very interesting in terms of what the human psyche can convince itself.

#5. Aum Shinrikyo Attack on Japanese Subway With Saron Gas
This documentary covers the 1995 sarin gas attack on the subways of Japan by the Aum Shinrikyo cult. With around 40,000 members at the time it was a cult sweeping the nation of Japan and ultimately one that tried stockpiled enough sarin gas to wipe out an entire country. The documentary on the attack in interesting, but read more about the cult if you are interested.

Overall I hope these 5 documentaries will hold you over for a week until I do my next installment. I hope you enjoy them and definitely comment if you watch them and say which ones you liked or didn’t like. I have a whole bunch more that I will put in the future, but hopefully you can watch these instantly because they are available on youtube. If you want them in better quality you might be able to find them in other places on the internet as well. Enjoy !

Sometimes I wonder how Naoki is doing. If he's still buzzing around on that salesman scooter...

Thank you! These look fascinating!

Good posts. These documentaries shows human nature and its good sides and limitations. I also read about the boom of lady dolls in China maybe due to less population of women or men who do not want to argue with a real woman and tend to have a realtionship with dolls. Good post, thanks for sharing

The Barkley Marathon is on the the most interesting and long parts of the underground running community. It's fascinated how up until these last couple of years almost no one knew about it. @calaber24p

Great list! Another great documentary available on YouTube is 'Helvetica', which dives into the history of typography and talks about how it influences everything from graphic design to the societies we live in.

I'm always on the lookout for great documentaries. I find them a lot more interesting the reality shows that most people are glued to. The website Top Documentary Films is a good way to discover new documentaries you may enjoy http://topdocumentaryfilms.com/all/
