The Future: The Possibility Of Capturing Memories And Reliving Them

in life •  8 years ago  (edited)

This post is mainly influenced by one of my favorite movies , “Strange Days”, a 1995 cyberpunk movie directed by critically acclaimed director, James Cameron. I think the movie is brilliant but it seems to have been largely forgotten by the critic community. Most lists I see on IMDB don’t ever list the movie and I rarely speak to people who have also seen it. Without going any further, if you haven’t seen the movie and enjoy a 90s y2k cyberpunk film, you’ll love it. Now to get to the main reason why I am referencing this movie in the first place.

The movie is heavily centered around a device called a SQUID, which allows the user wearing it to capture and save moments in their life to experience at a later time. This isn’t like capturing a movie, this is like capturing a full experience of someone’s life. When you playback the experiences you see everything they did, you feel everything they felt at the time. The device essentially merges your consciousness with another’s to bring you an experience you otherwise might have never had. After the first time I watched this movie, my mind was kept up for hours thinking of the possibilities and impact such a device could have on the world. In fact much of the technology discussed in the movie was based off real life technology being developed at the time. For example the SQUID, which stands for a superconducting quantum interface device, actually exists. It doesn’t let you relive or capture your experiences like in the movie, but it does measure extremely subtle magnetic fields.

Let’s, for a second, imagine such a device could be created in the future and released to the masses for consumption. What would you do with the device? What is even possible with a device like this? The movie does a good job delving into the dark side of things like porn, rape, committing criminal acts and other terrible things that small niche might be interested in, with the obvious exception of porn which lets face it would be a massive industry. I wanted to focus more on the light hearted possibilities this technology would have in the general public, but I will also focus on some of the drawbacks such a technology would have as well.

Giving Disabled And Elderly Comfort In Their Old Age

There is a large industry in the United States where people are sent to care facilities without the possibility of ever leaving. Especially amongst the elderly population who are basically just given a place to die in. These are miserable places and no one wants to be there, to the point where depression and medication is near unavoidable. What if retirement was just the beginning for these people? What if they could live their lives with a new experience every day? Sure in the real world they are paralyzed or too old, but with the SQUID they could live simple experiences like riding a bike or taking a tour of the Eiffel Tower. Anything they desire could be achieved and a massive industry would prop up to record the memories to meet the demands of these people. Sometimes even just walking the beach at sunset could be a memory worth reliving. With the SQUID the entire care industry would change overnight.

Vlogging Your Life, Reliving And Sharing Your Own Experiences

Have you ever wished you could relive an experience in life and the joy it brought you? Well with the SQUID, like modern Vloggers, you would be able to capture every memory you ever had and relive them at any point in your life. Imagine going back to the night you lost your virginity or the vacation with your father, who has long passed away, when you were a child. The possibilities are endless because there are an unlimited amount of experiences happening at once. This brings up the possibility of sharing what you witnessed in your past to your loved ones or to friends and family. Imagine telling your kids about when you saw a famous band live, but rather than just telling them, you let them experience it for themselves. Families would be brought closer together with how they would be able to relate to their parent’s lives. Imagine what happens when you inherit a collection from your father and your mother and you can relive their life and help in the grieving process. You can see yourself as a child being born or share the moments you had together. This is the idea that excited me the most.

Possibility For Therapeutic Use

A massive part of modern therapy is using the practice is slowly exposing patients to their fears to slowly get over them. You could essentially let someone relive a memory in a safe and protective place in order to help them move past it. In addition you could also just create calming memories for them that would ease their anxiety and stress in the real world. Basically used as a supplementary tool in therapy, the SQUID could be invaluable.

Some Possible Drawbacks

With everything in live comes drawbacks, the SQUID would be no exception as there are multiple things it could be used for to make the world worse off. One problem I would foresee happening would be the lack of people working and just sitting in SQUID dens, unlike the opium dens of past China, just reliving others experiences. People won’t strive to have their own lives because they can just live someone else’s. A large amount of people might decide to stop working, but if certain experiences cost money, they would be motivated to work and buy them. Also at the point this technology is created, human beings as a work force might be close to being irrelevant. Ideas like a mandatory income might be implemented and people would just be enjoying their lives.

I hope maybe this inspired a little thought of the possibilities of what could happen with this technology and maybe convinced some of you to go watch the film. I hope you enjoyed the write up and let me know what you think about the future this technology could have in the real world.

What immediately came to my mind is how the next step would be to let people tailor these experiences as the technology advances. Everything could be designed - how does the wind feel on your skin while walking on the beach or what color would the sunset be. It would be like directing a movie but you'd have direct control over everything, literally everything. From all the sensations felt inside the body to the tiniest details around you.

Maybe the next step would be to have shared experiences, from two people to hundreds, thousands and millions eventually. Whole world designed just for you, talk about matrix..

There would be AI's you couldn't distinguish from other humans or none, it's up to you. At that point I could see the technology discovering how to have experiences use up minimal time of real life time, just like when dreaming. Have an experience from child to elderly in 15 minutes of time in real world while you're waiting for your friend to come by for example. Now that would be something!

E: I think the upcoming Westworld sci-fi tv-series from Jonathan Nolan (known for Interstellar, The Dark Knight and Memento) touches this area of future technology advances.

This is a really interesting and awesome point. I didnt add this part in the article but imagine a social media where you shared exchanges with people like torrenting. You put up your beach experience and someone puts up an experience of drinking a nice iced coffee at a cafe in Italy.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Or while in one experience, in this example let's use your mention of iced coffee in Italy, you could be sipping iced coffee in a cafeteria and when you're done and turn from the next corner you could be witnessing a whole new experience that was determined to be something you would like as an user from past behaviour - just like we have google trying to determine our behaviour patterns in internet the same could apply here. So it would be a one seamless experience knitted together by different designers. And now that I think of it, we sure could be having and personal AI closely monitoring us and could act as one of the designers, perhaps slightly adjusting these designs to our personal likings.

E: And as you walk down the corner, after leaving the cafeteria, the change in environment could be gradual. The buildings could slowly change from ones from Italy to more akin to something from Mexico perhaps. This are all parameters that could be adjusted.

Nice post,
In the future , food and drink was also wearing virtualise...

I like the idea of relaxing in a tropical setting. But the problem is in today's society where we spend so much time online that 'the younger generation' is losing any type of social skills. It's amazing how we are coming a group of humans that only know how to express ourselves 'online' and we bury ourselves on the smartphone.. We just bought a motor to head to the deep end..
Let me know what you think?

These settings could be shared with other people, introducing social aspect. Also they could have human like AI's and these could be even used to increase social skills.

And here we come to another great movie: Total Recall - of course 1990, not 2012 remake. Its source - short sci-fi story of Philipp K. Dick We Can Remember It for You Wholesale, 1966.

  ·  8 years ago (edited)

Actually, it was written by Piers Anthony. I know, I was dumbfounded when I found out but I actually read the book, it just so happened at the time I was devouring Piers' vast catalog intensively. He also wrote some other stuff that was outside his normal teenage boy scifi/fantasy hybrid but I forget what it was just now.

Ok, to be precise, Dick did invent the original concept, but Anthony wrote what was made into a movie. http://www.goodreads.com/book/show/15512.Total_Recall

We Can Remember It for You Wholesale;

I am of the opinion that the Arnold character was just a lowly construction worker (with a bloody hot wife) and the whole movie was the 'action adventure trip' program he purchased.

I'd love to try skydiving and other extreme sports with this VR. Oh experiencing an F16-flight would be awesome.

yeah experiences like this would all be amazing AND possible. You wouldnt even need to learn how to fly and can still experience it.

Very nice man oddly I havent seen this movie I will however be checking it out as I am a huge cyberpunk fan.

I really recommend it. Im not sure why it seems to have been forgotten, especially since it was directed by james cameron. It is a bit long but its definitely worth a watch. I love these types of 90s cyberpunk movies, make me nostalgic of the early internet times.

I thought I knew about all of the cyberpunk movies, and recently I discovered one that was pretty good, in a cheesy b-grade way, Nemesis. Another one that you may not have heard of is one starring Christopher Lambert, it's italian, called "Nirvana". Nirvana is about an AI in a game that starts to have independent experiences playing the game by itself instead of merely being an avatar for the player.

Ill look into them, nirvana seems pretty interesting.

Nirvana is brilliant. At the time I discovered it, in a local video store, there was also another great movie with Christopher Walken called 'Trance' which has the name 'The Eternal' in the US release. I still haven't been able to find that one again to watch it. The italian language version of the dialog for Nirvana is better, the dub is worse than a typical 1980s anime. It doesn't really take away from it, it's just a bit cute in places.

In the end of the day, if the virtual world is immersive enough, it'll be used. If not it will fail like the Virtual Boy.

Definitely, I hope by the time I reach old age a full immersive experience is possible like the one I posted, but even if its not I bet we will have immersion on levels unthinkable today.

I remember the movie... This is a line that many people remember, though not from the movie directly

I guess I was a little prejudiced seeing the movie, because I'd read Neuromancer, and in that book, the "simstim" or simulation stimulation devices are seen as a toy, and the real hardcore information junkies go into cyberspace. Nevertheless, it's a cool movie, and I enjoyed it more the second time.

I'd never thought of the therapeutic uses of such a device, so that's a new angle.

Cheers!

Compelling, but something about having all of our needs fulfilled edges out creativity. The lack of tension in our lives dulls our tenacity for innovation and problem solving. Maybe there would be new problems to solve? Super compelling though.

yeah this is a question to ask yourself. Also in addition if we can live out anyone elses life whats the point in having your own identity anymore. If this becomes a reality were going to be asking some strange weird questions we have never had to ask before.

LOVED that movie too.

Yeah, this is good stuff. One of the best movies out there :-D

im glad to hear that someone else has the same love for it as me !

Interesting post about the future and this technology.

Isaac Arthur just posted a great video about Consciousness and Identity. It talks about memory sharing, among other things.

Interesting post

How amazing is it to consider the possibility of reliving it to a certain extent. So many moments, actually share as you experienced it... I've never seen the movie but will definitely have to now :) thanks.

I think someone in that movie paid to remember what it was like to have legs. Sounds fun.

Nice movie though but I am a fan of real life movies or based on true life story.

i am forced to post this in your comments becuse the following error wont let me make it a story as well as all the other bullshit it has cuased

do you care about your site or are all the rumors true, are you in it for the cash?

This technology kind of reminds of the movie ' Surrogates'. Seems like the ramifications are very similar.

There was also an episode of Black Mirror which explored a similar theme where everything a person sees is now documented in high detail.

I guess the main issue for me is that identity suddenly becomes somewhat tradeable and that's mighty scary!

You should watch Black Mirror - I think it was episode 2 that was about this - could be wrong but in any case

Sounds scary, I certainly don't want my passwords being logged there and stripping me away from privacy.

This would be like a BORG type of AI control grid. We would lose all our humanity.

An apt music video for this ;)

@calaber24p
Strange Days is great movie!

However, James Cameron did not direct it. He produced it and co-wrote it, but he was not the director.

Kathryn Bigelow directed Strange Days. She also directed Point Break (the original), and is known, most recently, for directing The Hurt Locker and Zero Dark Thirty, both of which won her Academy Awards for Best Direction.

Interestingly, Bigelow and Cameron were married for a couple years, but Strange Days was made several years after their divorce.

I've never seen the movie but the ideas you put forth are really cool. I personally would like to revisit past experiences and see my loves ones that passed. But the next thing that kind of bothers me is if I for some reason could not pull myself away from those moments too just live in the here and now.

As alway looking back on those days of our lives teaches us a lot of things. Keeping memories is just as exciting as it is but what if a certain person has bad memories, how he/she can earn any advantage from it?

I think this could have a great future, saving and reliving memories, helping those starting to lose their memories to Alzheimer's. I have seen this disease take it's toll on three of my close family members. Terrible to watch but, "What if"?

one of the best movies of my youth. 100% recommended

This could be a good device for people to share their culture & lifestyle with others. Perfect for people who intend to backpack around the world :D
