The last few years for Amd have been relatively tough in terms of sales and growth on their CPU division. They made the bet that future programs would utilize a much greater amount of cores than have more powerful single cores and ultimately this was the wrong decision. Intel chose the opposite and the programs and games of the last 5 or so years ended up working much better with intel CPUs. The Intel i7 outsold Amd’s flagship products and sent them back to the drawing board.
AMD and Intel compete somewhat like how we see gaming consoles compete. Usually every generation there is one system that wins and one that obviously trails. This usually goes back and forth each generation, for example the Xbox 360 won majority of customer support last generation, but now the PS4 holds that title. Owning the market share doesn’t mean that they cant stop innovating though, which is why many times the leader switches. The winning company sits on their laurels and doesn’t innovate.
In this generation of chips AMD look like they have built a fantastic product with their Ryzen series. Not only did they build it from the bottom up, but they created a new socket for motherboards to make sure it was blazing fast. The Ryzen is a 14 nm chip built with AMDs new zen architecture, currently smoking the majority of Intel chips on the market at this moment, and its half the price.
Intel will most likely always be the high performance market, but in terms of bang for your buck, that’s where AMD and especially the Ryzen shine. The new processor is fast, powerful and in many cases half the price of comparable intel chips. This is really going to have to force intel to either lower the prices of some of their chips, or come out with something great in the near future to counter AMD.
AMD is offering the Ryzen, depending on the model, in different core amounts. With their basic model at only 6 cores, it still is able to do the majority of what anyone could imagine they need done for a basic setup. This not only includes running applications like word the internet ect, but if you have it paired with a good graphics card, you can still have yourself a decent gaming rig on average settings. 6 cores is more than enough for many games and programs because there are times that older games don’t even utilize more than that and other cores are just left semi idle. The best thing is the 6 core processor is only around $200.
I really hope that AMD is able to stay strong during this generation of CPUs and ultimately pushes intel to further innovate and create better cheaper products. This is why you should love competition, because the winner ends up being the consumer. If you have always been an intel person and never checked out AMD, I would say it may be worth a shot if you are looking to build something good on a budget.
I have always been an AMD guy because they were always a better value and because of the reason you states; to try to make sure that they keep their doors open and compete with Intel.

I really hope they succeed. It drives innovation and lowers prices for the consumer. We are about due for some fresh competition as well.

I remember back in the day when I sold overclocked PCs, I loved AMD. Used a lot of K7 Athlon Thunderbirds....the 1800 would run just like the 3200 with the right adjustment and cooling. I've been sorry to see Intel be so dominant for so long, so it would be nice to see a change.

I have never had amd but the stats are looking pretty good for the money. I agree they are worth a look. amd certainly makes nice graphics cards too. Thanks for sharing :)

It would be great for amd's stock price if they started winning again! Their power consumption is great, so hopefully their speeds are consistent!

I like how now that AMD has knocked it out of the park in this new generation it has had the effect of making Intel push their game, hopefully dropping their prices a bit and innovating a bit more. Competition is great

Does seem lately AMD is kicking it into high gear. I wonder if I will regret my last build with the i7 7700K unlocked lol. Might should have waited for the outcome of this tug of war going one. Great post, followed

Great comback of AMD, monopoly of Intel was very unfair to customers and future development of market.

But can it compete with the new core i9 line of processors from intel?? And of course play minesweeper at 60fps...
