What Causes Body Odor and Why Some People Get It Worse Than Others?

in life •  7 years ago

Everybody at one point in their live has dealt with body odor, either having it themselves or being close to someone who has had it. Most people, even if they don’t get body odor often will still just use some sort of antiperspirant or deodorant as a daily routine. I personally have been showering every morning and using deodorant since I was 13 and never had a problem, however that isn’t always the case. Some people who may do all of that still might have body odor and it doesn’t mean they are dirty, they might just be genetically disposed to it. I want to go over how body odor occurs and what makes some people more vulnerable than others.

So the basic cause of body odor is the result of the apocrine gland, glands found in the skin all over the human body , most numerous in the arm pits and groin area, breaking down proteins with bacteria into acids. Because they are scent glands, an odor is created when the process of breaking down the protein takes place and body odor is emitted. While sweating does speed up the process, someone doesn’t have to necessarily sweat in order to get body odor.

There are a large amount of factors when looking into how powerful the smell is. Some medical diseases like diabetes might increase the smell or the consumption of spicy foods or simply just being overweight and having excess sweating. The amount of bacteria that someone has and the amount of proteins that are broken down play the most important role. Some people might be genetically disposed to having large amount of bacteria in their glands which ultimately makes them easier to have body odor.

Depending on your family background you are more likely to have larger amounts of bacteria and a harder time controlling body odor. For example people from Asians tend to have a very small amount of bacteria, which is why many don’t even wear deodorant. While those from Indian and African heritages often have a larger amount of bacteria and have to take more care in choosing the right type of hygienic products. Caucasians can differ vastly from where their ancestry is , but on average fall in the middle of the scale.

It also should be noted that different cultures have very different ways of treating or even embracing body odor. In many cultures the smell is not considered disgusting, but rather an extension of ones being and in some cases their sexuality. Because the smell is connected with pheromones, some people who might like the smell of their significant other’s body odor might even see it as a turn on. Our smells depending on the person can be very different and people trained to smell out different body odors can identify people based on their scent. This is a very strange concept, but this is exactly what dogs do to identify people and other animals.

So perhaps even if you are struggling with body odor it isn’t a bad thing, someone might find your smell attractive and you can chemically attract a mate! I hope this article was somewhat educational and might have disproved some thoughts or misconceptions you had about body odor. I actually wrote this article after a friend asked me what caused it and I wanted to find out.

Interesting post! I learned a bit about this topic in my organic chemistry course as a fun fact but we never discussed it in that much depth. Great job; lots of knowledge everywhere we look.

Thanks for the final nod those of us who, ahem, may be more inclined to get a bit ripe.

Big take away for me is the non-pivotal role of sweat in stankiness. Supports my decision to stop using anti perspirents and switch to deoderants exclusively. Don't need all that alumuminim by product on my under arms when a deoderant gets the job done.

I noticed that my BO went waay down when I had a vegan diet for a few days. Diet has GOT to have something to do with it :)

@shayne

Yes! Me too! I wondered if it was just me imagining things, but I'm sure it's true. When I do sweat, it's just not nearly as bad as it used to be. I've been vegan for more than a few days though. Are you still at it?

I noticed my body odor depends on the foods I eat. For example, if I eat onions, then I can actually smell onions in my body odor the next day. Has anyone else noticed this?

Nice article...eating plays a big role on body odor, I'm vegetarian and since I stopped meat and unhealthy food, my body odor changed.. I rarely use deo..just in special cases..

Same here. I changed my diet due to back issues. White coats and chiropractors blamed it on a car accident I was in during my late teens. Never had any issues until I hit my mid thirties. Needless to say. years of the docs and their BS including the money they raped me of led me down a path of detox. Turns out, I was acidic, had a backed up lymph system and my kidneys weren't working properly. I went raw mainly fruits and veggies for a year. Cheats here and there but pretty hard core and voila no back issues. To this day I'm still a vegetarian and no more doctors. One of the many bonuses is very little if any body odor. When I was on the SAD diet I could take a shower and still have body odor. Now, I can work outside and hardly have any if at all. It's a pretty cool side effect of the right diet for the human body. Wanna learn more? Check out Dr. Morse on YT. Garbage in, garbage out as I always say but if your body is not working properly due to years of a bad diet (SAD) the garbage stays in and that's where the problems begin. Diet has everything to do with many things including this. JMO and personal experience.

very helpful knowledge. THanks! followed

I am of Hispanic ethnicity, and unfortunately my family has overactive sweat glands and i would say...overactive odor glands as well lol, I've tried a variety of deodorants and realized that some make it far worse than others. Any suggestions on a good brand to use?

if you do use go for Nivea

I'm a person who is extremely OCD with how I smell, and how my hair looks. I can't go out the house unless I have enough axe Dark Temptation on y'know? Although, sorry but I found the part that if you're struggling with BO it's not bad and you might attract a mate!
Somebody might find your booty smells attractive. xD
Sorry, but seriously thanks for such a good post, very informative!

I have noticed that the types of foods that I eat make a really large difference in my body odor. Thanks for the background information because I've always wondered about the differences but never took the time to really look into it.

I was introduced to this clear, crystal like ,mineral, rock like thing, and while I am one w/ low body odor I found that it works great!
I notice that depending on my diet that odor may change, but using this once or twice a week seem to be really effective.and last forever..well a long time...
so long I forget the name...lol...
:-)
namaste

GIGO= garbage in garbage out.....what u eat, reflect it on our body...I guess....hahahaha...

wow , i've never realized that ! thanks for the information ! keep it up!

It should be noted that some people who are selfconscious about their, let's say, bad breath cannot really blame onions and garlic etc. Some of them have probably a more serious condition and problems processing nutrients and they should ask a general practician for opionion. Also, if you're in a state of ketosis or just eat a lot of fatty meals go look into that too.

Hey Slider! You stink!

my friends hate my body odour so much that they only gave me perfumes as presents on my birthday :(

Exercise and/or booze.

This is awsome. Thanks for the break-down. May I interject and add something. Sometimes what you eat actually gives you body odor. Deodorant is a big no no for women. IT has been linked to cancer. Just my thoughts. Thanks for sharing

To say it kindly, this is all bull shit. Although it is superficial and will not help anyone solve the problem of body odor, there's truth to what you say.

I'll break it down for you and everyone else in a simple manner:

  1. body odor is caused by eating foods that man was not designed to eat/drink.
  2. after eating like crap, whatever does not become liquefied will be excreted through your colon. (Unless the stomach acids turned it to an acidic gas...then it comes out via burps!)
  3. any of these waste products that made it to your skin tissues (putrefied dairy, toxemias, acidic particles of starch, etc. from your diet) are excreted via sweat. And this stuff smells gross. Think of the milk/cheese you had...it smells pretty gross after ~12 hours of being left out, right? Your sweat is a mixture of that and all sorts of other junk.
  4. the liquefied junk gets excreted through urination, and you find this junk in the sediment of your urine--doesn't smell too great, does it? The kidneys can only filter so much per hour, and they often get backed up with "a lot of work to do". Backed up kidneys mean that you will sweat more--your skin turns into a third kidney.

Point being: the cause of foul body odor is the fact that you're programmed by the food industry to buy foods that you think you need. To help with the odor problem, eat as much as HUMAN food as possible. Eat what the human being would naturally eat (the human species is frugivorous) and you will have less foul body odor. Simple! (And your fluids will taste better... no comment.)

And hey! You're getting paid >$300 to hear this great advice...awesome! :)

Really interesting. It's funny you should say about some people liking the smell of their SO's BO because my boyfriend has often felt self conscious about if he's had a bit of a sweaty day but I always tell him not to worry... I don't really think it's that bad of a smell!

On other people though, it can be awful. Perceptions are strange!

I would highly recommend the book--I Contain Multitudes. It goes over the history of the microbiome (bacteria and archeria) that exist in our bodies and all around. It's amazing to see how symbiotic arrangements with bacteria help squids to glow in the dark, and us to process food.

We usually think of the microbiome as a bad thing like--body odor. It's really cool though to see the whole picture. I highly recommend the book.

Thanks for the post.. Interesting topic and very useful knowledge for body odor..

Piet Byleveld is regarded as South Africa's most successful detective, with a ninety-nine per cent success rate during his career that spanned almost forty years until his retirement in 2010. While investigating a serial killer case he said the following of one of the killers;
"The former railway policeman from Johannesburg was wearing PT shorts and sneakers. He was macho, bald, with a strong body odour. It's always the same. as soon as they start to panic, they stink!"
