The new everyday part of life. The smartphone, and cracked screens

in life •  7 years ago

So I decided to write a post about the one thing that everyone faces theses days. The dreaded drop of the phone and it lies face down, you are afraid to pick it up and look at the screen for fear of seeing the tell-tale spiderweb of cracked glass!

This is a common occurrence for some people. Some more than others. I myself have cracked the glass on every phone I have had, touch wood. I would hate to break this one. I have a feeling I can't repair this one like the previous ones. I usually just order the screen and replace them myself. But that isn't the point of this post.

This post is actually about a good friend of mine and her phones. I shall start at the beginning.

The Beginning

So the first time I met this friend i saw her phone. The screen was in a dire state. I had seen this on other peoples phones so I thought nothing of it. Then she gets a new phone. Nice phone from a lesser known brand. She was doing very well with it then dropped it. Produced a very small crack at the top corner. Nothing that stopped her from using it. Then a while later she dropped it again. This time doing a lot more damage and breaking the LCD underneath as well. So she orders a new screen and when it finally arrives from china weeks later she brings the phone and screen to me. So I sit down and proceed to remove the old screen and replace the new one and at last she has a nice fully working phone again with a beautiful clear screen. Things are going well with it. She hasn't dropped it. Until.....

I see a post on her Facebook about how her phone was "gone again" and " Expensive day and I didn't even get the photo that had me sitting on the rocks in the first place ". I instantly knew that her phone had gone in the sea given that I knew the place she had been that day.My suspicions were correct.

The Next Stage

So coming to what this post is supposed to be about she asks me could she borrow my old Samsung Galaxy S4. I saw sure no problem. I probably should have thought this through a bit but I just thought "what the hell". It is an old phone. I have another replacement in case mine breaks. So she is using my old phone until hers arrives. Until last Saturday I am messaging her on Facebook. Then all of a sudden my messages aren't delivering and she is gone without a trace.

About an hour later my girlfriend messages me saying she has arrived at her door distraught. Turns out she had put my phone in the same pocket as the one she dropped her other one into the sea. But here is the part that really got me. When I got to my girlfriend's house and saw the phone I was amazed at the fact that she had broken the LCD underneath but the glass on top was perfect. I couldn't understand it! I have seen my fair share of broken screens on phones and tablets. I have seen the LCD break and not the glass but only on devices where there is a gap of air between the top glass and the LCD. When the glass is bonded to the LCD either the glass breaks or both the LCD and glass break. I have to say I am slightly impressed with her.

The Photos of Said Phone

So here are some images of the broken LCD....

As you can see the phone looks absolutely perfect! Albeit a bit dusty.

So as you can see the cracks are underneath the glass. The last photo is when the phone is turned on! Just a bit of light comes through at the bottom.

In the end she gave me the money to replace the screen either by myself or though a shop, so no real harm done. And it was an old phone! I hope you enjoyed reading this!

Ouch!! Not good. I've somehow never managed to never break a phone screen. Although its probably going to happen now I've said that.

Oh now you have jinxed it! I hope it doesn't happen though! If it does you know where to go!

Nyc and keep posting like this.

Ouch thats an unpleasant experience! I would never let anyone use my phone as I have previously gave old phones away to have them brought back to me broken as well without getting the money back. It's quite amazing she broke it in such a unique way :O She should stop putting in phones in that same jacket haha . This was a nice read !! resteemed and upvoted :)

Yes she is. Ah I knew she would pay for it if she broke it. So no harm done!

In my mind there's a third phone taking a picture of the first phone having its picture taken by the second phone. Which is a good indicator that I should either be in bed or I need to take my meds. Like Dave, I've also never broken a phone, except the times I didn't answer my boss' calls and claimed my phone was broken.

Take you meds! Oh sure we have all done that!

I broke my first screen a few months ago. I don't like using cases or screen protectors and it fell onto pavement. Took a huge chunk out of the glass. I put packing tape across it to hold it together for a while.

Eventually I did the screen replacement myself and it only took about 45 minutes. The new screen came with a protector and I put that on.

The next day I dropped the phone again and there were cracks all over it. I got lucky and it only cracked the plastic protector. Before I broke the screen I wasn't looking at new phones but now... I got the bug and every few days I find myself looking a new models.

It is a horrible feeling isn't it! I went and got a Samsung S7 edge. They can't really use screen protectors!

I finally broke down after writing that. Ordered a OnePlus, should be here in a week. ;D

Oh nice. The 5t?

Yeah the 5t, have been looking at it for a while now even though they have had some bad press lately. My old phone is a nexus 5. I can have it plugged in while using it and the battery still goes down. Have to have it plugged in all the time. So now I am excited about the dash charge system!!!

One of the guys in college have it. It's a nice phone. Only thing i don't like is fingerprint scanner at the back. I had a phone like that. But it's a beautiful phone nonetheless!
