1st. - Capes:
Capes are the new jackets, this fall. It’s bringing us back to a vintage, dramatic vibe, and we’re loving it. You can stay warm and still look strikingly unique with this bold look. They’re mysterious and statement-making. Also, it’s pretty much as comfortable as wearing a blanket, but you look fancy. Can’t really lose. Looks great with a beanie and leggings.
2nd. - Fringe:
The runway was filled with boho-chic fringe this season, hanging off skirt hem, lines and covering dresses. The textures ranged from big and chunky to delicately thin liquid gold wisps. It looks like old Hollywood mixed with a new, futuristic couture that’s just gorgeous. It can be both edgy and ladylike, but is always unexpected. A great party look.
3rd. - Window Pane Pattern:
This smart and sophisticated look is great for a night out or a business meeting. It’s incredibly versatile, and worn by a strong woman that isn’t afraid of a bold graphic. It’s a less grunge, more elegant take on the usual plaid. Wear it like a casual-chic tunic over jeans or with black tights and heeled booties for a more pulled together look.
4th. - Duster Coats:
These long-line coats are great for keeping you warm and dry in the winter, and they’re also a gorgeous, flowing silhouette to wear all fall and winter long. These floor-sweeping beauties are gorgeous in a cream or navy, paired with a shorter hemline for a stunning contrast. It’s timeless and super wearable, as well as being a great layering staple for when it gets windy.
5th. - All Gray Everything:
Fashionistas are known for donning all black, but gray is the star of this season’s runway. There was so much gray this season, it might as well come in fifty shades. It channeled an androgynous, menswear inspired vibe, with a ton of oversized chic all-gray suits and vests coming in a diversity that ranges from soft heathers to strong pinstripes.
6th. - Brocade/Interior Designs Inspired Textiles:
Designers got some help from the world of interior design and textiles, this season, from thick velvety brocade to Wes Anderson vintage wallpaper inspired prints. We can see references to things one would usually find in the ultimate tastemaker’s home, from exquisite Moroccan rugs, to wild florals.
7th. - Statement Making Tights:
Black tights are the standard autumn and winter garb, and designers thought that was getting a little too boring. Proenza Schouler brought out innovative, wide-cut fishnets, while others explored flashier, crazy prints, or a racier lace version, like Rodarte. These pieces are perfect for staying warm while still showing off those legs. Pair with hot pants or a tent dress.
8th. - Thick chokers, AKA turtleneck of the future:
Unlike actual turtlenecks, there is no shirt attached to this thick collar. It’s a modern take on the choker- designers styled a thick scarf necklace with dresses that were slinky with plunging necklines, for a startling and high fashion update to the 90’s trend. Try wrapping a head-scarf around your neck, or cut off the collar of an old turtleneck.
9th. - Culottes:
These trousers have been around since the ’70s and keep making a comeback. Another comfy trend, these exaggerated, wide legged pants that hit just above the ankle are forever Euro-trendy. This seasons, we saw contemporary versions with black leather, denim, and pleats. It’s always a win paired with a fitted crop top.
10th. - Fur collars:
There were a lot of fur accents this season, and adding fur to collars is one of the most classic and elegant way to add texture to an outfit and kick up your fall coat a notch. If you’re concerned about animal cruelty, opt for a faux version. Play around with colors like cream and burnt orange. It looked dreamy and vibrant on the runway, with a Mad Men inspired vibe, and is sure to be cozy on chilly days.
