Why I have become reluctant to online shopping?

in life •  6 years ago

It was around 2003 when e-commerce was a new concept and I placed my 1st online shopping order. It was really an amazing experience to order an item sitting in a cyber cafe and product gets delivered directly at home. I really loved the concept and started to buy products online. After 15 years 2018, a lot more has changed. Now one can order any item directly from the mobile app and within a few days products get delivered. More and more people ordering online and online shopping craze is almost at the top.

Despite buying online whenever I get a package delivered I always felt that something is not right with online shopping. No doubt we are getting products cheaper but we are paying very high prices in the form of environmental pollution.
whenever I go for shopping always carry a reusable bag with me to reduce unnecessary consumption of plastic bag provided by shopkeeper but if I get a product delivered at my doorstep it comes with a lot of packaging materials which goes directly in the garbage. This excessive use of packaging material forced me to rethink about online shopping habit.

It is really a pain to see a small item comes in a multilayer packaging and would require no packaging material if I would have bought from a nearby shop.
If I think that I would send all packaging materials for recycling, then it is also not possible as not all packaging materials are recyclable and secondly it is again a problem to keep all these garbage at home and send for recycling. Then why I should waste my time to take care of this waste? Comparatively, I found it is better not to encourage this unnecessary packaging of any product until and unless the product is very essential for me and not available in the local market.
Of course, the online shopping trend is increasing at its highest pace but also it is a right time to think about its consequences in the future.
Can we become so selfish that for our online shopping obsession putting our mother earth in a big trouble?

One of the following two things happen...

  1. If you order online, then you get the packing around what you ordered.

  2. If you buy in person at some store, the retailer got the item packed around what you ordered.

I always carry my reusable bag so always ask the retailer not to give me any plastic bag or wrapper. We just have to change the habit to do something good for our mother earth. Thanks!

Maybe you misunderstood me. As a business owner, when they get the products shipped to their store, they are shipped in the same way that you receive your items. All this does is cause your retailer to recycle your plastic for you. If it comes directly from the warehouse to you, then you step into the shoes of a business owner. Your going to the store to buy instead doesn't stop them from using plastic packaging, it only changes who does it.

Great article sir really it's very important issue I like your point of view. As like you sir I always carry my reusable bag with me when I go to shopping 😊 thanks for sharing this great article with us

I purchase everything offline it seems. Hopefully in the future we'll see more earth friendly boxes and packaging equipment. Maybe even something reusable.

Surprisingly fashion is the second most polluting industry and the workers get paid very little as well.We should all be wearing sustainable clothing in the long run.

Right.online shopping made people life more easy for their shopping.

Undoubtedly online shipping made our life so simple as we can order anything within minutes. Service like amazon prime made too fast as they deliver same day or next day. Now taking about packing, yes they follow proper way of packing because they can expect courier person to handle it with care. For them packing cost is nothing as compared to product value and customer satisfaction. Since you also takes about environmental waste then it's a problem with our country. We are way behind in recycling of waste. I am currently in Singapore and here you can see massive use of polythene but here they recycle 100% of it so nothing to worry. But India have a long way to go. Good topic you chosen today sir @chetanpadliya

Even it is 100% recyclable I would prefer to choose less packaging option. Thanks for the comment.

this also sounds good and may be online shopping sites can provide the options to choose. This people can decide what kind of packing customer want.
