Body language is basically a form of a non-verbal communication, where only physical actions, rather than spoken words, are utilized to communicate or reveal the message. Such behavior comprises various facial expressions, body position, gestures, eye motion, hand movement and also the usage of space in a particular way. These gestures or postures can be learned through different forms of training. There are a variety of reasons why people communicate through body language.
Communication through body language can refer to any one of the following: direct eye contact, non-verbal communication like humming or smiling, pointing, hand movements and eye movements and listening. It is important to understand that eye contact is very important when it comes to non-verbal communication because it has the ability to reflect what the person is thinking. When we look at someone we are not necessarily communicating with them by staring. Eye contact can also help us understand the other's emotions and intentions. People who are good at reading other people's eyes will do a lot better job of directing people and making them understand what they are trying to say through their body language.
Body language can also be divided into four major categories, which are the direct eye contact type, the smiling type, the waving type and the non-verbal body language such as the touching type. The direct eye contact type of body language refers to looking directly at the other person; a smile is an example of this. A person may look away for a second or even a long time before continuing to make eye contact. It is considered quite normal for a person to make this type of body language when there is no physical attraction between them but they are just concerned about how they look. A smile on the other hand is considered to be a rude gesture.
Smiling is seen to be a good body language strategy because it communicates that you are happy and relaxed. People around you will notice if you smile at them. People tend to reciprocate smiles that are directed at them and you will find that people around you will also smile back at you. You can also use body language to get attention from others such as using a figure of speech which will be explained later in this article.
A simple example of body language that you can practice when interacting with people is using the figure of speech strategy. In the figure of speech strategy you will take a relaxed body position such as your back straight with your shoulders back and your head up. Next you will move your hands to your sides and move your chin forward. This action will create the impression that you are a straight upright figure. When you do this simple action, it will create the impression that you are confident, upright and relaxed.
When it comes to non-verbal communication the gestures that we use can also be used as great body language signals. The two most common gestures that people use when they are communicating is the palm facing upward and the hand placed on the chin or mouth. Both of these gestures can be used to communicate important information that the receiver can not see with the eyes.
Another type of body language that you will want to master is the type 4 posture. This is called the four-hour body posture. To practice this posture you will want to sit comfortably and then place both of your feet together at the same time. Keep your arms down by your sides and place your hands in your lap with your fingertips pointing upwards. You will then simply place your hands on your thighs at your sides and begin to breathe in through your nose while your back arches. This will create the impression of an upright position.
Finally you will want to master talking using the voice modality without having to worry about your posture. This is very beneficial for communicating nervousness. To practice talking using the voice modality without having to worry about your posture simply start speaking as if you were talking on the phone and begin to say your name, date, or address in a calm manner. As you get more comfortable with talking using this method start to widen your range of words and start practicing saying the name of multiple people at one time. This will allow you to talk to people without having to worry about your posture. Once you master the body language then you can start practicing using the voice without having to worry about your posture.
