I agree it's better to avoid distracting or dulling your post...Also, leave a comment without an accompanying upvote, is not what authors expect...BUT what about comments (reply)? Should author upvote at least some comments?

Regarding your query about whether the author should upvote......it depends on the author...on the comment.....on the relationship between the author and the poster.....on many factors......in every case however....Steemit has a built in reward for commenting and voting on posts. Hope that assists.
