My title is such an oxymoron, but that's because the fear is stupid.
I said I was going to leave this alone, but I can't.
It's been eating at me for days now. The woman who said LeBron James should just "shut up and dribble"...sigh. Here's the thing, I don't know much about her and don't care to. This isn't about her at all. It's about this mentality of superiority dressed up and presented with a bow, but inside the box is fear.
Let me explain.
Somehow a certain proportion of folks in this country think that African American athletes should just be silent. That they should just be grateful to be rich and successful. African American athletes are here for their pleasure only so that they can win their fantasy sports games. They should be quiet and humble to be able to do that. Folks act like they "granted" them their success giving them no credit for the hard work they had to endure to get where they are. Also, there's the stigma that African American athletes are dumb jocks. What would they know about equality, civil rights, government or constitutionality? All they know how to do is run and jump. They also seem to equate financial success with contentment. Why are these athletes upset? They're rich. SERIOUSLY? Please go sit down somewhere with that backwards, sickening, over-inflated sense of supremacy. Quite frankly, this sort of thinking is not only ignorant, but it's illogical and no one has time for it.
Racism is racism.
It transcends socio-economic status, age, gender and geography. At the end of the day, a well-dressed, African American man or woman with four degrees, living in a gated community and driving a Wraith, can still be racially profiled, pulled over and arrested for "fitting the description" or killed because some officer felt threatened. They can still be passed over for a promotion, they can still be asked to give up their seat on an airplane.
When Colin Kaepernick decided to take a knee, everyone lost their minds for the same reasons as I stated above.
"He's rich, what could he possibly be upset about?" It's like folks think these guys don't have brains and experiences. It's such denial. How dare he actually care about the plight of his people. This is not new. Mohammad Ali did it in his day as did many, many other African American athletes.
The fear behind all of this is that these fools out here know that LeBron, Colin and many others aren't stupid.
Not only that; they have a following and huge influence. They could change minds and hearts especially of our young people. This is what fear looks like. It lashes out at the strong so not to appear weak.
Your old, simple ways are dying out folks.
This world is smaller than you think. It's global. We all need each other and this dumb division that you're still trying to push is pushing the entire country behind. We can't get our house in order while other countries are getting the best of us and moving ahead. We have to be smarter than this. Let that fear go and get it together.
