The truth about Bullying - What would you do?

in life •  8 years ago

Hi Steemit Friends,

Many of us have had the unfortunate experience of having to deal with bullies in our life, If not you then I'm sure someone you know. It's something that no society can escape and as a result can have profound affects or even life long implications to some of those who have had to endure it.

Why do bullies do what they do and How can you get them to stop?

Unfortunately there can be so many different reasons why a bully does what they do. It can be the result of how they are raised, a cover for some imperfection or flaw in the bullies own character or self, or other various reasons why they might need to lash out and humiliate another person. Bullying is not just about people disagreeing with one another or even fighting each other. It is an individual or a group of individuals who exploit their power over another individual or group of individuals by repeatedly intimidating, insulting, threatening or physically/verbally harming them.

Bullying has always existed and is fairly common, since before my time until today and as our society ages so does the act of bullying. In today's world and with the dawn of technology, we now have cyber bullying. No single person can stop it completely and usually it takes an entire village to make any kind of impact.

The act of Bullying is generally highest during the younger years of school. As children progress and get older, we tend to see less incidents. This however does not mean it does not exist. Male bullies tend to lean towards violent acts and female bullies tend to be more verbally and emotional abusive.

What got me thinking about the topic of bullying?

I was exposed to a viral video about 2 women who were verbally abusing a man for simply being overweight and eating at McDonalds. I couldn't help but feel for the young man and cheer for those who stood up to the women.

Although later I found out that this was just a social experiment, I could not help but feel sorry for the young man being bullied in the video and cheer for those who stood up to the bullies. It shows that we still have decent people out there willing to stand out for others. What would you have done in this situation?

Together lets put an end to bullying. It is everyone's responsibility to intervene and manage the problem on the ground so that no one person or group of people are subjected to such harsh treatment. If you find yourself being the bully ask yourself why you are doing it and what good will come of it. Would you like to be treated like that?

The problem is you can't just stop bullying. Hurt people hurt people. The only way to solve the problem is for us to take shame out of the equation on both sides (the victim and the bully) and work towards love and reconsiliation.

Yep, and no one person can do it alone. It will take an effort from everyone to stop bullying.

This is a very positive way to look at things. Aiming at reconciliation is absolutely necessary.

I am not 100% on taking the shame out of the equation in terms of the bully - since that individual needs to come to understand the gravity of that which s/he has dabbled in - but if such a person can be broken out of the bullying habit while avoiding such then such would be brilliant.

I went through this when I was younger & I really appreciate this post from you <3 @cloh76

You are not alone (this is not to say that your suffering was less valid).

I think that a lot of us have experienced bullying at some points in our lives. It hurts and it frustrates and it can certainly shape us if we are malleable also.

Correct. Being bullied is being bullied and it is all the same . I too was bullied when I was younger and although I overcame and fought off my bully the hurt and frustration is still there.

Sorry to hear that. I hope life turned out well for you.

It did thank you so much! :D @cloh76

Great insight.

Bullying has certainly changed from when I was in school. I'm not sure how often kids are getting bullied in the playground in real life, it seems to mostly be cyber bullying today which is more pervasive because it follows you home.

Social exclusion is one of the most traumatizing experiences and from the outside it appears relatively mundane. I think most "bullies" are raised in broken households and are exposed to violence and harassment in their home environments.

Kids who're raised around parents who talk about their problems rather than fighting and yelling don't yelling and hit other kids. Parents need to set the example of how they want their kids to behave. Within one generation I think we could end all violence, including ideological wars, if every parent raised their children thoughtfully.

Cyber bullying also has a greater reach. I agree and think parents and adults have the responsibility of being examples for children and teaching them how to treat people accordingly. The challenge is getting everyone to be on the same page.

I've stopped my car to stop a group of bullies from beating up a kid. If everyone did something it wouldn't exist

Admirable. Everyone should stand up against bullying.

I think Social interactions of the likes as bullying and harassment should be spoken about more often. Good on you @cloh76! Voted and Followed!

Thanks for the support. Yep Awareness is just the start to addressing any issues such as this.

Good post. They suffer in psyche for some reason, and want to create suffering for others. Getting bullies to change needs to happen.

I agree - if communities join together to put an end to bullying we can make a difference. Please help spread the word. Thanks for the support

Great piece, thanks. Bullying sux.

great article. I was a victim of bullying, it wasn't fun but I put it down to the person I am today. It certainly made me stronger but I can see how those experiences could destroy a teenager as well.

Sorry to hear about your past experience and glad to see you rise above it.

Thanks mate. But I strongly believe in What doesn't kill us makes us stronger.

Words of Wisdom!

The thing with bullying nowadays is there is no way to escape. Social media has made it a 24 hour event. Back in the day if you got bullied at school that was it. You went home and escaped from it. With social media, it is an all day occurrence.

Yep. It has evolved and with the internet, it is out there forever for everyone and anyone to see
