…continued… from part 1
It is so sad what we humans have reduced ourselves into. We are the better people yet we act worse than animals. Animals have a bit of decency and I wonder why we humans can’t do any better. No is not consent and why would another human scheme on raping another human? Is it to punish such person or to have a taste of what that person is like? I don’t seem to understand it. I blame the society too, because we focus more on vindicating the perpetrator and we see the victim as a messed up person, rather than taking actions against the perpetrator and seeking help for the victim. We have things twisted up and that is sad.
Rape is now becoming a normal thing where the perpetrators can even brag about it and such person would be praised just to fuel his or her ego. It is terrible. We seem to have forgotten the trauma the victim and the family would be in, the stigma and the likelihood of not being able to fulfil his or her dream anymore as a result of this derailment. It is quite disheartening.
I would like to address the parents. The bulk lies with you and as much as I admit that the child would still determine the course of his or her life, we still need to tell them the right thing to do. We don’t even need to just tell them, we must make sure we act it too. Children of these days would listen half-heartedly to the things you say while focus with intent to the actions you take and the steps you take will be what they follow.
As parents, you need to show them the right path. You need to be able to sit your children down, and let them know the difference between right and wrong and this is so important especially in the way the world is now, with so many horrible things to pick up off the internet and the social media. It is important as a parent, you do your part. There is an adage in my local language that says: ”Ti ara ile eni ba n je kokoro buburu, ti a ko ba so fun, kurukere re ko ni jeki a sun loru” meaning, “If your neighbour is into something shady and you keep quiet, when the chips are down, you will also be affected by it, in one way or the other”.
