Have you ever Farkled?

Farkle is a fun family game that you can play with a minimum of equipment. In fact, you can see what you need on the pad in the picture below:

• Pencil
• Paper
• Six Ordinary Dice

That's it, and that's all—other than one or more other family members ready for some fun.

Beginning to Farkle.

Everyone rolls one die, and the player rolling the highest number goes first. Play proceeds clockwise around the table. Each turn begins with the player rolling all six dice. The results are scored as described below:

How To Score Your Farkle Dice

Each [1] - 100 points
Each [5] - 50 points
3 of a kind - 100 x the value - example: three [5]s == 500 points
4 of a kind - 1000 points
5 of a kind - 3000 points
6 of a kind - 5000 points
3 pair - 1500 points
2 sets of 3 - 1750 points
Straight - 2000 points - i.e. one of each, i.e. [1] [2] [3] [4] [5] [6]

Minimum Starting Score: 450 points to "get on the scoreboard."

With each roll,

one or more dice that score must be set aside. The player may then choose to either accept the value set aside, or roll the remaining dice.

If on any roll, all the dice rolled are scoring dice, the total up to that point is noted and the player must roll all six dice again, stating the score up to that point and adding the words "and rolling."

If any roll of the dice produces no new score, that player has "Farkled" and receives a score of zero for that turn.

If the player chooses to accept the value accumulated thus far on the turn and not roll again, the sum of the scores of all rolls during that turn is added to their total score. In either case, the turn proceeds to the next player.

You must achieve at least 450 points on a single turn to begin recording your scores.

Once you've scored 450 or more in a single turn, that is recorded as your initial score. The designated scorekeeper may then begin tracking and adding all your subsequent scores.

The goal is to reach a total score of 10,000 or more points, and then to end the game with the highest score.

Example turn:

A player rolls [4] [2] [1] [2] [3] [2], and choses to set aside the 3-twos (200 points) and the [1] (100 points) for a total turn score, so far, of 300 points. This leaves him only two dice to roll.

The player roll the two remaining dice and gets [5] [2]. He sets aside the [5] (50 points). His total turn score is now 350 points, not yet enough put him "on the scoreboard."

He rolls the remaining die, and gets a [1] (100 points). Although he now has 450 points for the turn, enough to put him "on the scoreboard," he has used up all the dice and must now roll all six again.

The player rolls [3] [2] [6] [5] [3] [2]. He sets aside the [5] (50 points) bringing his total to 500 points. Although he could choose to roll the remaining five dice, he chooses to pass the turn to the next player, keeping the 500 point total score so far.

The end of the game goes like this:

When any player reaches and accepts 10,000 points, that is the beginning of the end. All remaining players then have the opportunity for one more turn.

On your final turn, if you exceed the highest score, you become the winner—unless someone else beats your score on their last turn.

There is no point in stopping to accept a score lower than the highest scoring player. Thus, most players will continue rolling until they Farkle. However, there is always the possibility of coming from far behind and enjoying a tremendous upset victory...

Sure, it's a mindless game.

Sure, it is mostly a game of chance. There is a small amount of strategy, mostly consisting of deciding how low a score to accept on any given turn, not pushing your luck too far.

Even so, it's generally a much more fun evening than sitting in front of "the boob tube." Conversations are fostered. A good time can be had by all.
