Very interesting topic sir. The feeling of patriotism caused by country, land, and freedom is indeed an amazing thing. Patriotism to the state however is very dangerous indeed, and does lead to a dangerous form of nationalism. However, I believe there is a form of nationalism very important to a well functioning, safe, loving society. Nationalism in the terms of wanting ones country to be almost solely focused on the well being of its own citizens and the protection for it's own is a good thing. Allowing a society in which everyone is welcome becomes dangerous in the terms of clashing ideologies. An example would be of the mass amounts of immigrants flooding into Europe and the unrest being caused by the extremists carrying out terrorist attacks on their newfound country. Certain ideologies are simply not compatible in certain countries in our current world. For example, Christianity does not do well in most of the Middle East and Islam is not compatible with the ideas of western countries. Allowing extremely different ideologies and the societies resulted in them to mash together causes civil unrest. That being said, we must be careful of allowing a good nationalism to become a breeding ground for a dangerous form in which we end up living in a society with absolute loyalty to the state and are punished dearly if we ever "step out of line," like the society in George Orwell's classic novel, 1984.
