BRAINS IN SHORT SUPPLY

in life •  6 years ago

Yesterday I dropped my wife off at the airport around lunchtime. All was fine until I drove away and ended up in a Police road block. This is getting fairly common and have been stopped on the way to the airport as well before. Most people will think nothing of it but I know better.

If you are going to the airport to catch a flight you are normally short on time and a little stressed. If you are going to get frustrated with their time wasting you are more likely to accept their offer of a bribe. The slower they go the better chances they have of getting something out of you. I was held up in ques for around 2 hours yesterday and all they did was check my licence. I am almost 100 percent sure they were after some foreign currency. Why else would you target the airport. Not great for public relations for the country as the first thing you see is a crooked cop.

A while ago I was driving from Johannesburg to Durban which is about a 5 hour drive give or take. On that trip I was stopped 4 times and yes on two of the stops I was speeding. Each one didn't want to issue a ticket but wanted "lunch money". In the end it was so bad I took the smallest notes out and hid my wallet under the seat.

The corruption with the Police here is so bad that I put nothing past them and that is why I say ulterior motives were at play at the airport.

holy moly I had no idea this was going on but have heard of the racism and persecution of white and stealing land from the white farmers and ranchers. is it like that everywhere?

It is widespread unfortunately. Not everyone is like that though but anyone who has some power seems to be though. There is a lot of problems bubbling under the surface and it is not healthy. The farmers are being killed slowly.

hey there @cryptoandcoffee.. that is so sad. Is the economy going downhill and that's one of the inflation triggers?

There was so much corruption with president Zuma that he emptied the Government coffers. They have had to raise VAT for extra cash. Plundering is still happening and inflation is ridiculous.

howdy @cryptoandcoffee hey is he out of power and did he escape with millions of the country's currency? I don't know how you stop corruption in an entire country because the people in charge are corrupt and won't let reform take place so what do you do?

Escaped with billions. Pray the next guy is not as corrupt. the new guy has already plundered a long time ago when he was the mayor of Johannesburg so hopefully he won't need to do it. The only answer maybe is to move eventually.

billions?? holy moly. that's sick. I don't believe in murder but I think killing that guy would be justified in this case.

This is probably a dumb question but you've thought about what country
would be good? It would almost have to be off continent wouldn't it?

Most definitely. English speaking a must as I am not the best at languages. Have thought about it and I am still undecided.

Interesting piece on the truth of what runs South Africa at present, corruption. It is so frustrating when you work, pays tax which a portion of goes to paying someone to protect you and they become just another threat. Now you have to pay your protectors not to hurt you in some way, sickening.
