How my country celebrates new year a few decades ago compared now with regards to firecracker use

in life •  last year  (edited)

Celebrating New Year in the month of December at New Year's eve is quite quieter now compared in the 80's and 90's because during those early times there are not much regulations on the use of fire crackers. I mean the police are regulating those but they are often bribed with either money or given with firecrackers to let the traders sell different sorts of firecrackers. I happen to enjoy those years because indeed, it is fun to light-up those firecrackers when and wherever you want. I am referring to the locally-made ones with varying strengths. The local neighborhood stores and some individually stores sells them like candies. So both the young children and adult alike can buy them so easily. There was a time that firecrackers can already be bought at the neighborhood stores from September and their usage goes higher as the end of the year celebration looms.

There is nothing more fun than lighting-up a fire cracker for both the young and adult which is why its wide use during the past decades has been very popular until the government had intervened with stricter regulations to combat an life-disturbing effects of accidents associated with its use.

Nowadays the government is banning unregulated fire crackers, it seems that many people now has an anxiety of using them but for a good reason, it is because firecrackers had maimed a lot of people during the less stricter decades of using them particularly at the eve of New year's day where it is a great spectacle in our local TV program to watch the new coverage where they delegate reporters to emergency rooms to show the public the victims of fire cracker accidents. The victim would often lose a finger or two or the whole hand, two hands, an eye, or victims which stepped-on a fie cracker and opened their foot with the blast of some type of powerful firecracker and thus creating a wound which needs emergency attention. I mean it is not worth it to even get injured by a firecracker let alone losing your fingers because of it.

The public are made aware of the regrettable dangers of using hand held local firecrackers and they succeeded because truly, it is not worth to get maimed and or injured resulting from the use of firecrackers. However it reduced the fun of celebrating New year's eve and so, a lot of people would only just go and watch the sky and see as much rockets that blows up in the air and produce beautiful light effects.

Because of needless injuries and even loss of properties and lives for that matter, the government became stricter about using firecrackers until they are banned. The department of health also had steeped-up its campaign about the awareness of using firecrackers and by doing so, many people realized the consequences in using it. So the neighborhood stores began to not by and sell it because it had gotten hard to buy it from the town here in my province to sell those firecrackers of numerous types especially for the ones that are made for children which actually had injured a lot of young people during its heydays of being readily available for kids to buy. So slowly, the numbers of the people getting injured by firecrackers became lower and lower particularly now that there is a ban for using firecrackers that this country had used before except those that are permitted like rockets that are not as dangerous to use unlike those that are manually handled and can cause a bog possibility of busting your hand or any part of you body.

The public are just encouraged to make other noises during the new year's celebration like banging a metal object, blowing horns, while some would pass-by and rev their MoPeds which is more annoying than fun.

The more wacky and fun dragging of metal objects to make a noise a few hours before the stroke of midnight is now had been replaced by revving mopeds, well at least here in my Barrio.

Then of course it will be a sad new year's eve if there is no food to be had and the types of food can vary based on many factors like budget, how many people will eat, and if they are celebrating or not. I do not believe in celebrating New year's eve for the reason that the real years and date is supposed to be based on the Jewish calendar with regards to when a new year should occur. It is just my mother wanted any special foods to be prepared on such occasions such as her birthdays and this coming Christmas and the new year. That is why when I ask her to prepare foods such as macaroni salad or spaghetti, she would refrain in doing it and would tell me to wait for this and that date. Now I also lack in appetite in eating foods already and I would end-up eating small amounts of food while most of the special foods are restricted for me to have if not filling me with nitrogen compounds due to my being a dialysis patient for that matter. But nevertheless we are preparing special foods for us to enjoy just to make the occasion a little bit fun.
