Goal Setting - Focusing on End Goals instead of Means Goals

in life •  7 years ago  (edited)

Hi there! After my previous video about bucket lists I want to share with you some thoughts on goal setting.

When talking about goal setting, one of my mentors, Steve Pavlina, talks about two different types of goals, namely means goals and end goals. I am a fan when it comes to explicitly writing down my goals and understanding the difference between the two helped me formulating the right type of goals.

To explain the difference to you, I will use the situation Steve describes on his blog because I think it makes it very clear. Here we go:

“Let’s say you want to see your favorite music group perform live in concert. That’s an end goal — it defines your outcome. You want to be there in person and enjoy that particular experience. It’s not a stepping stone to anything greater, and no substitute experience would produce the same result.

Now suppose a radio station is having a contest where the prize is two tickets to that concert, and you decide you want to win that contest. That’s a means goal. Winning the contest is not the final outcome you’re after. It’s only one of many ways that could lead to you sitting at that concert.

But if you don’t win those tickets and fail at your means goal, you may still be able to achieve your end goal. You just need to find another way to get to that concert.”

And that what it is all about. It is about keeping the end in mind so when there’s a setback, you just have to find a different path. End goals are outcomes that you are unwilling to compromise on.

That’s all I had to say. I hope this gets you thinking and helps with your search for your real end goals.

Ciao!

I like this philosohy a lot! To me I interpret it as "do what you have to do in order to achieve your final outcome".

Be it exercising, writing, establishing a habit; is all in the same flavor.

We have to be disciplined enough to get rid of the noise in our life and do what we have to do in order to get what we ultimately want in life.

I agree @bravojim. If you're unwilling to compromise on certain outcomes, you will do whatever it takes. Just keep your mind open for better routes to get there, even if you are already halfway a certain path :-)

The road to the end goal is rarely a straight one. Often is it for of curves and bumps, sometines even detours are needed to arrive at the desired destination!

Exactly :-)

Good inspiration! I really do need to start writing this stuff out!

Thanks @sequentialvibe. I hope it inspires you to do so!

I actually thought I new about goals until I read this. Thanks @cryptotem
