2 reasons I got rid of Instagram

in life •  7 years ago

I think it's been 8 months since I've deleted my instagram account. It's only had positive outcomes on my life. I found I was on it a bit too much. Yes I don't see what everyone's up to and the pictures they post, but it's not a big deal! After all, instead of staring at my phone when I'm with people I try to make conversation.

Here were my 2 major reasons:

Narcissism

I noticed a lot of people were taking selfies including me. I mean yeah they looked good but it seemed like I wanted to show everyone how good I think I looked or something. I wanted people to tell me how good I was, not wanting to hear it from my own lips. I started posting only group pictures before I deleted it to make me look like I had more of a life than people staring at their reflection. Ultimately I realized I should be lifting others up instead of trying to climb to the top.

Determining Worth By Likes

Like everyone I was always excited by how many likes or comments I'd get on a photo. If I didn't get what I wanted I convinced myself it was quality over quantity and if that wasn't enough just delete the post altogether. When other people would get more likes and comments it'd bother me. I was spending too much time checking my phone for a new notification after I read my quote over and over and over before posting it. It started occuring to me that none of this mattered and I should put my focus on other things. So that's what I did and I haven't looked back. Mind you Instagram doesn't seem like that big of a deal, which it's not IMO, but it can lead to other things improving your life.

I don't care whether you keep or delete instagram just don't be a narcissist or determine your worth by likes.

Narcissism is taking over our society and the more we do to get rid of it the better. And even adults like to check to see how the 'Likes' are adding up, who did and did not, etc. It is not worth it. Ctheprince has a point. Our society has put too much value on social networks and the counterfeit popularity they give us when we post kodak moments of our fabricated lives. And if you determine you need the accounts for cryptoprenuership, just create a new account and do your marketing... but don't live there.

Interesting... I have my first smartphone and "it's a trap!" Up until a year ago, I still used a flip phone. I've started neglecting it and leaving it behind, with its Instagram bleeps and Facebook boops.
