It’s been a whirl wind couple of weeks, hence being so behind with my posts - sorry!! 🙈 - so when Michael asked me if I wanted to go with him to Hermanus for a government conference about harbour development, I really didn’t have to think twice.
He fetched me and we hit the road! It’s a beautiful drive and in an hour and a half which felt like half an hour we were there. I haven’t spent much time in Hermanus but it’s charming with the most beautiful winding coast line. We fetched his brother who’d been there since the night before and went to a potential acquisition of his for a drink and a snoop. The hotel was rather shit but the views are spectacular!
Just when I thought I couldn’t be more relaxed or content a mother whale and her calf started frolicking in the bay in front of us. I nearly burst into tears as my heart soared with joy!
My dad used to be the chairman of the Whale & Dolphin Conservation Society in London and my first pet was actually an adopted orca called bubbles, ever since I’ve had a deep love for these intelligent and beautiful creatures with their sophisticated family dynamics and playful natures. I’m not flashy, I don’t really care about fancy parties or fast cars but show me a whale and I’m in heaven.
As I said to Michael, it puts everything in perspective. Whatever negotiation we had been talking about regarding the hotel suddenly became meaningless in relation to the incredible life on display in front of us. We are but a small part of this beautiful planet and it’s our responsibility to protect the creatures that can’t speak for themselves!
After our drinks we made our way to the conference which was typical of government conferences, tasteless and mostly full of officials looking for a free lunch instead of investors with the potential to actually make a difference. No matter. He was there to ensure the future of the land he already rents from the public works department and start the negotiations for a further development both in Cape Town and Hermanus.
I was impressed with the speakers but one has to wonder how most municipalities are in such a mess if they really do the things they say they’re going to.
It was interesting none the less and mostly it was nice to be with him, away from home and the drama! I liked his brother immediately and the 3 of us ended up having a lovely evening, turning our whole table into by far the rowdiest in the room till eventually long after the official dinner had ended the bar closed and we made our way to the BNB. After a long day and lots of wine we happily hit the hay!
Although I still have a lot of anxiety surrounding his age and what people will think, I can’t help but be drawn to his energy, kindness, charisma and incredible desire to help everyone around him. He’s a truly good human, one of the best I’ve ever met and there’s a big part of me that says nothing matters more than that.
Love,
Daisy xx
